How Will You Enjoy Boxing Day?

Many call the day after Christmas Boxing Day. Learn the origins and tell us what it means to you.

Shopping will be on the minds of many today either returning holiday gifts not to their liking or looking for further price reductions than they found before Christmas.

Many call today Boxing Day.

In the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other places it is a legal holiday, according to Factmonster. Based on legend, during the Middle Ages, servants were required to work on Christmas in England and took the following day off. Their employers would give them gift boxes as they prepared to leave and enjoy the day with their families.

In the United States, some go back to work the day after Christmas while others look for shopping bargains. Please let us know the best deal you ever got on Dec. 26 in the comments section below the story.

In Ireland today is St. Stephen's Day, with rich traditions of it's own.

St. Stephens Day, the Wren Boys and the Wren Song!

The wren, the wren, the king of all birds,
St. Stephen's day was caught in the furze,
Although he was little his honour was great
Jump up, me lads, and give him a treat.

Chorus: Up with the kettle and down with the pan
And give us a penny to bury the wren.

Here, enjoy the tradition in Ireland with the original Clancy Brother recording!

In 1986 my Mother and I went to Montreal for the Christmas holiday, we got to experience "boxing day". Not much different than our after the holiday sales, but the atmosphere was very festive with quite a european flair. I bought a wool lined dress coat for 35 dollars! That was the one and only time I ever went shopping the day after Christmas. I don't know what it is like here, but it was very civilized and no mob scenes.

I am spending Boxing day in Key West. It's warm, sunny and definitely a party atmosphere here on Duval Street.
