Local Schools Named to State Academic Honor Roll

Schools in Grayslake, Libertyville and Vernon Hills were given the honor for sustaining high academic performance for three consecutive years.

 

Several local schools have been given high honors by the Illinois State Board of Education this week. Eight schools have been named to the Academic Honor Roll and given the 2012 Academic Excellence Award.

The following schools are among 454 Illinois schools receiving the award, along with the percent of students who met or exceeded standards:

The schools honored all sustained high academic performances over the past three years.

According to the Illinois State Board of Education, schools that receive the Academic Excellence Award must have at least 90 percent of elementary and middle students meeting or exceeding state standards in reading and math for three straight years. At the high school level, at least 85 percent of the students must meet or exceed standards on the Prairie State Achievement Exam given in 2010-2012.

Gets better...let me tell you another way districts use test scores. If a school doesn't meet AYP, and the district is required to give parents choice, they need to notify the parents in the fall. Our BOE, in their infinite wisdom, sent the notification scheduled for delivery right in the middle of the strike...4 1/2 months late. Any conspiracy theorists out there?

You don't have to convince me, Terri. Districts all over the country are misusing these tests. They are not developed for the way they're being used. Some districts in other states were pitting schools against schools and teachers against teachers by giving bonuses to the staffs that made their pre-assigned goals. If one teacher's scores caused the whole school to not get their bonuses, what do you think that does to morale and camaraderie? It was inevitable that some teachers and schools would resort to cheating.
