Four years into her investment and the shop Sharyl Curtis of Grayslake has been hoping for, working for and striving for, opens its doors in the Station Square shopping center of Prairie Crossing. Gingi's Unique Artistic Finds is now open for business in suite 1C.
"I think people are craving a shop like this in the area," Curtis said of her store which showcases and sells art and other products almost exclusively made in the United States.
A large portion of the store is dedicated to various artistic wares. Everything from pottery, soap and jewelry to paintings and fiber arts is made by artists from across Illinois. Curtis' said she wanted to focus on the talent that is already in the area. "Our items are evolving all the time because we have limited quantities available," Curtis said. "These pieces are really all one-of-a-kind."
And for the retail side Gingi's offers a selection of children's books, serving pieces, gift wrap, even a line of men's ties. "For each retailer I chose to buy product from I made sure their company has a social conscience to them," Curtis said. "They all feel it's important in their business to give back."
A Well-Calculated Risk
Curtis has been calculating the ins and outs of Gingi's for four years. When she lost her job as a director of business development she knew she was ready for the change. She also knew opening a gift shop in this economy would be tough.
Last year she hosted several 'tastes' giving people a glimpse of what she was hoping to offer and getting feedback on how much they would pay for it. After extensive research Curtis said she feels she has really captured exactly what the area shoppers are looking for.
"It's been hard at times but we've had such positive feedback and that's what has kept me going," Curtis said. "We're bringing in beautiful pieces of art that are actually affordable and I think people will appreciate that."
"We are offering unique artistic finds for those who enjoy gifting with a creative flair," Curtis said.
Gingi's will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday from Noon - 4 p.m. To find out more about what the shop has to offer, check out their facebook page.
