Oasis is Treated to Hardcore/Indie Acts
The Oasis Youth Center in Grayslake welcomed local bands Lybria, Weye, The Felix Culpa and Awe Howler.
The Oasis Youth Center opened their doors to the intense performances of Lybria, Weye, The Felix Culpa and Awe Howler on Dec. 17.
The show was presented by Greg's Guitar Lessons and Xtreme Hockey & Lacrosse.
Hailing from Grayslake, the band Lybria kicked things off. The alternative band is composed of Dan Schaibly, Andrew Shaffer, Evan Keefe and Nick Dowmon. Lybria wailed through their set showing that this is what the people came to see.
Support for each band that played was clearly seen as lead vocalist Dan Schaibly went out to say that "each of our CD's presented at our booth are free, but only if you buy a CD of one of the other bands that are playing with us tonight."
Next up on stage was the instrumental band Weye. The group comes from Gurnee and was ready to follow a great band with their unique style. Weye is Jared Wright (guitar), Kevin Stephens (bass) and Grant Gosizk (drums). Weye has derived their sound from what seems like what can be only described as crunchy in-your-face math rock. The band has notably been influenced by Chicago bands such as Piglet and Pelican.
Weye brought on their style of dynamic tapping riffs, loop pedals, powerful bass hooks, and blaring drums to the front line of the stage. "We have a lot of fun," said Weye bassist Kevin Stephens. "We like this place, it's cool. It's a good place for the kids to come to and I wish I had it when I was younger. Good people, good sounds, good lineup."
The third group to soothe the crowd was The Felix Culpa. The band was the only out of the four bands playing that night to be signed to a label. The Felix Culpa is signed to No Sleep Records and are more known on the Chicago music scene. The band is made up of Marky Hladish (vocals, guitar), Tristan Hammond (vocals, bass), Dustin Currier (vocals, guitar) and Joel Coan (drums).
The band is best described as a progressive indie band coming from the Wisconsin/Illinois border. Their explosive energy rocked over 200 people in the Oasis on Friday. The Felix Culpa played the longest set of the bands, consistently feeding the crowd with the eruptive sound they urned for.
And to finish off the night was the debut of the post-hardcore band Awe Howler. The band comes from Johnsburg and was releasing their first EP, Be What May. Awe Howler is Jeff Leber (vocals, guitar), Steve Guardi (vocals, guitar), Luke Marshall (bass) and Jay Rami (drums).
The quartet thrives on playing big with a fierce sound. Theirs was, without out a doubt, the ringing in the ears of every audience member that would not be gone for quite some time. Awe Howler vocalist and guitarist Jeff Leber stated, "The show for us and me especially was really intense and emotional. It's also really nice to see people's faces so close and being able to feel it with them. I loved it."
