Readers' Choice: Best Preschool Finalists

Your comments and reviews will determine the champion

First, thanks for your feedback regarding Wednesday's polling.

We can clearly see how passionate our communities are about this topic, which is why we're back with it again today without the poll.

The comments that resulted from our original posting on Monday were amazing, and we're looking to build off of that as we move forward.

Here is the list of finalists. We eliminated St. Gilbert's per the request of its principal.

We encourage your participation and positive, civil comments. Only positive comments will count toward determining the winner.

You can post your comments for one of these preschool finalists via:

The comments and reviews can be posted through 5 p.m. Friday, April 27. We'll count up the comments and post the winner on Saturday morning, April 28.

Thanks again for working with us on this valuable initiative.

So tell us, where is the BEST preschool in northern Lake County?

I believe Grayslake Co-op is the best preschool around! The fabulous, certified teachers help guide children to explore the world around them. It is clear the teachers have a strong grasp on child development and foster social emotional development while facilitating and creating incredible learning opportunities. I couldn't be happier about the school, and as a teacher myself, feel so lucky to have my children attend this preschool.

I vote for GCNS. The coop has been one of the best things I have done for my children. The teachers are all certified and most of them were coop parents themselves at one point. It is a parent run school and that is important to me. We see our children and their friends grow and learn from smack dab in the middle of the whole thing and all of us make life long friends. The curriculum can't be beat and the children LOVE learning. I cannot say enough about the Enrichment program! The children study science, art, music, nature... and come away with a hunger to learn more!

Without A doubt, Kinderhaven Preschool Academy in Lake Forest! Under the direction of the brilliant Dr. Penny Robins, our Reggio inspired curriculum caters to the natural creativity and curiosity of our children. Dr. Robbins is a firm believer in engaging the children at Kinderhaven in compassion projects, instilling at a young age the importance of giving back and doing good for others. We love our school and the education of children are getting at Kinderhaven!

The Grayslake Cooperative Nursery School is a beautiful facility, where my children and I have made lifelong friends. The certified teachers fully prepared my children for Kindergarten, and best of all I was able to volunteer in the classroom on a rotating basis! The service projects we did taught my children to care for others, the field trips about our community, and the parent involvement taught them that their parents will always be active in their education. We love GCNS!!!

We LOVE Grayslake Cooperative! The teachers are wonderful, the classrooms are bright and cheerful, and the parents are very involved. It truly feels like a family. When it was time to send my oldest to preschool I was very nervous about it, as he had never been left with anyone but family, but from my first tour of the school and meeting the teachers I immediately felt at ease. I had this overwhelming feeling that this was the preschool for us. Now I have both of my children enrolled and they love going to school! They are crazy about their teachers! I really can't say enough about how great this school is. I recommend it to everyone!!!

Grayslake Coop! As a parent, I love the chance to be so involved in my child's classroom. My kids get so excited when it's my turn to be parent helper! It's a great chance for parents to get to know the teachers better, as well as their child's classmates and other parents. Not only do the students create lasting friendships, the parents do too! The teachers are all certified, and they are so patient and caring. My kids love their teachers!!! We couldn't be happier with GCNS - it really is the best!!!

We absolutely love the Grayslake Cooperative Nursery School! My oldest has attended for two years and my youngest will start school there in the fall. The teachers are so compassionate and loving toward the children as they educate them. The parent involvement is fantastic, allowing moms and dads a glimpse into the classroom on a routine basis. In addition, the bright and cheery location makes the learning environment that much better!

Kinderhaven Preschool Academy has one of the most unique curriculums that has had a direct and profound impact on my children, our family, and the entire community. This type of curriculum, Dr. Robbins, and all of the teachers at Kinderhaven have afforded my boys the opportunity to learn through creative compassion projects and giving back to their community. Kinderhaven teaches children to be critical thinkers which I believe is crucial when trying to raise responsible children and citizens. They also have an outstanding art program that in my opinion exceeds any other creative arts program in a preschool setting. Kinderhaven has not only taught my children it has also taught my family, our community, and me so much as well. Does it really get any better than that?

Grayslake Cooperative Nursery School. The teachers go above and beyond! For example, we had to miss orientation (because we were just moving to town) and so the teacher brought over my kids' materials for the first day so that they wouldn't feel left out. It helped out so much to make them comfortable at a new school. Not only did they have their materials, their teacher was the first visitor they had at their new house. They also send emails after each class so parents know what happened each day, and have several evenings of fun activities for the kids too. I think the end result is that the kids experience preschool as a big extension of their own family - and what could be better than that?

Grayslake Cooperative Nursery School! The teachers and aides are educated, experienced, patient and kind; the curriculum is fun and creative; the families are incredibly involved, dedicated and friendly; and all my children have/had great experiences. We love the field trips, and that they bring in librarians, dentists, police, firefighters, pilots, etc to enhance their learning experiences. We've made lasting friendships with the families at this school. We love GCNS!

Kinderhaven Preschool Academy in Lake Forest is so wonderful! It's student-inspired curriculum has inspired my son to LOVE LEARNING, which is the most important lesson a preschool can teach, in my opinion! The art program is amazing, an example of which is currently featured at Lake Forest Bank & Trust's west location. The school's compassion projects have taught my son the important value of empathy, one of life's most important notions. I could not be more pleased with Kinderhaven Preschool Academy.....my vote for Best Preschool in Lake County!

Our family votes for the Grayslake Cooperative Preschool. My 12 year old son and 10 year old daughter had such a wonderful experience there that we didn't consider sending our youngest daughter anywhere else this fall. The play based, developmental curriculum is the perfect introduction to a school experience. The certified teaching staff are warm and loving with many years of experience. I love the high level of parent involvement, the field trips, and the two parent nights a year. I have been recommending the Grayslake Co-op for many years.

Grayslake Cooperative Nursery School gives the parents so many options for participating in their child's first school experience! My kids loved that I could volunteer in the classroom as a parent helper and attend fun field trips with them. Beyond the volunteer rotation, parents can also get involved on the board and special committees. My 8 year old and 5 year old loved to go to school each day, and although my son will move onto the kindergarten in the fall, he is super excited to return to GCNS for kindergarten enrichment. It's so great to have this alternative to full day kindergarten which is so expensive! As a volunteer in D46, I can tell you that GCNS graduates are well prepared for kindergarten and beyond. This is because of the outstanding teachers. We will be sad to leave after next year, but we will always be a part of the GCNS family!

I appreciate that our area has many wonderful educational opportunities for young children. In the midst of this "competition" let's not lose sight of how blessed we are with excellent choices. Having said that, we love Precious Lambs preschool. The youngest of our children graduated from there 4 years ago, and we're remained involved with the school. Our children were loved, nurtured and taught by wonderful caring teachers who have become friends. Proceeds of our annual fundraiser go toward a scholarship fund so children of all income levels have the opportunity to attend a high quality preschool - that speaks volumes about the values of Precious Lambs, and why it receives our vote.

Considering its longevity and the obvious loyalty expressed by past parents and students, I'd say the Grayslake Coop must be doing something right. It certainly did in our family's case. While my daughter was there in 1991-92, she built a couple of friendships that continue to this day. And our participation as parents proved a great way to get acquainted with what was then our new hometown.

When the time comes to loosen the apron strings and begin your childs education, it can be a little stressful to say in the least. Coming from a long line of educators, finding the "perfect" school is of most importance. Through research and the ever most efficient *word of mouth* GCNS, in my opinion by far exceeds any other preschool around. The teachers, I can honestly say, met their callings. The way they teach, with such enthusiam and excitement, well, in my opinion, is such a breath of fresh air. My children thrived at the GCNS and continue to excell now as 5th and 2nd graders. GCNS gave my children the stepping stones they needed not only to become excellent students, but gave them a boost of the social skills needed as well. Overall, the best decision I have made up to this point with education, is sending my children to GCNS.

We support Precious Lambs Preschool -- it is a creative, wonderful place where children grow and families feel welcome. Our first child entered the program nearly 10 years ago and our youngest graduated last year; they still love to visit their teachers and director. The kindergarten enrichment program (KEEP) is a gift to area children. We have always been impressed with the actions of this modest school, including how it raises considerable funds every year not for fancy digs but for scholarship programs. A host of parents whose children graduated years ago still volunteer!

It’s great to see such support for preschools. I might suggest that everyone needs great schools where they live and work, not just the “best in a county.” I hope one take-away from this is the unveiling of some new places for young families, and when it’s time they can take their short list, get recommendations from neighbors/friends and go on visits to find a good fit. Do this with an open mind, be suspect of hype, and lean toward kindness. The rest will fall into place.
