Schakowsky, Schneider Laud State of the Union

Freshman Brad Schneider and Veteran Jan Schakowsky come away with different impressions of the same message. Sen. Mark Kirk joins the chorus on gun control.

Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) saw President Barack Obama’s State of the Union through different eyes but came away with the same message Tuesday.

Both north suburban lawmakers praised and ratified the President’s proposals to raise the minimum wage, stimulate job growth, implement gun control and more. They heard the same message but saw it differently.

Earlier: Schneider, Schakowsky Give Back to Honor King

Schakowsky, a seven-term veteran, was excited by the challenge the President laid at the feet of Congress while Schneider was awed by the full experience of his first State of the Union address on the floor of the House of Representatives.

“It was a pretty incredible experience,” Schneider said. “I thought his opening quote of (President) John Kennedy that ‘it is the task of us all to move forward’ set the tone.”

Citing the issue of climate change, Schakowsky liked the way the President challenged Congress to act letting the members know something would be done one way or the other.

“But if Congress won’t act soon to protect future generations, I will,” the President said. “I will direct my cabinet to come up with executive actions we can take, now and in the future, to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequence of climate change and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy.”

Schakowsky heard the message loud and clear. “He was challenging Congress,” she said.

Change Seen in Attitude on Gun Control

Another strong theme of the evening was gun control, particularly background checks, limiting the use of both assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines. The President made it personal when he talked about the shooting of Hadiya Pendelton, whose parents were the guests of Schneider and sat in the gallery with the President’s wife, First Lady Michelle Obama.

“She was shot and killed in a Chicago park after school, just a mile away from my house,” the President said. “In the two months since Newtown more than a thousand birthdays, graduations and anniversaries have been stolen from our lives by a bullet from a gun,” he added referring to the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Schakowsky was moved by the moment. “I looked up in the gallery and saw tears in her eyes,” Schakowsky said of Cleo Pendelton, Hadiya’ mother, when the President mentioned her daughter’s name.

On this issue as well the President issued a challenge as he invoked not only Hadiya Pendelton but the loved ones of shooting victims in Newtown, Oak Creek, WI, Aurora, CO, Tucson and Blacksburg, VA. “They deserve a vote,” he said.

Kirk, Schneider and Schakowsky All See Change Coming

Schneider and Schakowsky both see that vote coming and are ready to do something about it. “I’m going to reach out and find people to stand with me,” Schneider said. “It has become time to face this issue.”

While it has been difficult to even bring gun control meaures to the floor of the Senate and House for a vote, Schakowsky thinks that will change.

“I’ve been involved in this issue for 20 some years. It really is different now,” Schakowsky said. “There are new players now,” she added referring to the willingness of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to pump money into campaigns and former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ) new organization to fight gun violence. “There are senators working on legislation now.”

One of those members of the upper chamber who has authored legislation is Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park), who has sponsored legislation to make trafficking of guns a federal crime.

“We should work as a nation to reduce gun violence and save lives,” Kirk said in a statement. “I believe we can pass a universal background check bill this year to keep guns away from criminals and the mentally ill, while protecting law-abiding citizens.”

The President also proposed raising the minimum wage to $9 per hour and assuring people have the education to acquire the skills to have higher paying jobs. Schneider was happy to hear that since the first legislation he introduced was a bill to foster better and consistent job training.

“He wants to make sure we help the economy by creating jobs people have the qualifications for with an emphasis on manufacturing,” Schneider said. “That’s why my first bill was the America Works Act.”

Perhaps you are unaware of the success Germany has had. The job market ain't great, but it has gotten better whether you believe it or not. The stimulus DID create jobs. I know, it's so much easier to take right wing pundits word for it rather than look into it yourself. You seem to have plenty time on your hands. Maybe you could look into the facts.

No pundits, just over 8.5 million jobs eliminated from the universe since Obama took over. That means there was no gain from the stimulus, just 8.5 million less jobs. Fact, check it out, 8.5 million less jobs. I know it's hard to find, CBS, ABC, NBC won't report it, but The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases these numbers... That's 8.5 million less people paying taxes.

It was an excellent State of the Union. The President stated what needs to be done and a clear vision for the future. Of course, the Republicans would rather dodge clear messages from the citizens, such as a 92% desire for universal background checks. I guess what really matters to them is what their lobbyist tells them at power lunches. Rubio looked like a scared rabbit and not ready to be President. If he is the future of the Republican Party, I say....that's all you've got? Hillary 16!

In the last American civil war, there was a north and a south, geographically different positions, how do you propose the next civil war will occur when there is no north and south anymore, and all of your enemies live on your street and in your town. Will you be going door to door asking what side people are on before you shoot them? If this civil war is imminent I'm just curious as to how it is even possible.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama did some cherry-picking Tuesday night in defense of his record on jobs and laid out a conditional path to citizenship for illegal immigrants that may be less onerous than he made it sound.
A look at some of the claims in his State of the Union speech, a glance at the Republican counterargument and how they fit with the facts:
OBAMA: “After years of grueling recession, our businesses have created over 6 million new jobs.”
THE FACTS: That’s in the ballpark, as far as it goes. But Obama starts his count not when he took office, but from the point in his first term when job losses were the highest. In doing so, he ignores the 5 million or so jobs that were lost on his watch, up to that point.
Private sector jobs have grown by 6.1 million since February 2010. But since he became president, the gain is a more modest 1.9 million.
And when losses in public sector employment are added to the mix, his overall jobs record is close to a wash. And when losses in public sector employment are added to the mix, his overall jobs record is a gain of 1.2 million.

WASHINGTON (AP) — OBAMA: “We have doubled the distance our cars will go on a gallon of gas.”
THE FACTS: Not so fast.
That’s expected to happen in 12 more years.
Under a deal the Obama administration reached with automakers in 2011, vehicles will have a corporate average fuel economy of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, twice the 27 miles per gallon, on average, that cars and trucks get today. Automobile manufacturers won’t start making changes to achieve the new fuel economy standards until model year 2017. Not all cars will double their gas mileage, since the standard is based on an average of a manufacturers’ fleet.

WASHINGTON (AP) — OBAMA: “Real reform means establishing a responsible pathway to earned citizenship – a path that includes passing a background check, paying taxes and a meaningful penalty, learning English and going to the back of the line behind the folks trying to come here legally.”
THE FACTS: The seemingly stern admonition that illegal immigrants must go to the back of the line, often heard from the president, doesn’t appear to have much practical effect except in the most obvious sense. Everyone who joins a line, whether for a movie, a coffee or citizenship, starts at the back of that particular line. It’s not clear he is saying anything more than that illegal immigrants won’t get to cut in line for citizenship once they’ve obtained provisional legal status.
Like those living abroad who have applied to come to the U.S. legally, illegal immigrants who qualify for Obama’s proposed path to citizenship will surely face long waits to be processed. But during that time, they are already in the U.S. and will get to stay, work and travel in the country under their new status as provisional immigrants, while those outside the U.S. simply have to wait.

Reply

Daniel Krudop

11:20 am on Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Additionally, Sending illegal immigrants to the “back of the line” is something of a distinction without a difference for some legal immigrants who dutifully followed all the rules before coming to the United States.
For instance, some legal immigrants who are in the U.S. on an employer-sponsored visa can’t easily change jobs, or in some cases take a promotion, without jeopardizing their place in line to get a green card. In other cases, would-be legal immigrants in other countries wait for years to be able to settle in the U.S.
Obama is using “back of the line” somewhat figuratively, because there are multiple lines depending on the applicant’s relationship with family already in the U.S. or with an employer. Generally, a foreign-born spouse of a U.S. citizen or someone with needed skills and a job offer will be accepted more quickly than many others.
But even as a figurative point, his assertion may cloak the fact that people who came to the U.S. illegally and win provisional status have the great advantage over applicants abroad of already being where they all want to go.

WASHINGTON (AP) — OBAMA: “I urge this Congress to pursue a bipartisan, market-based solution to climate change, like the one John McCain and Joe Lieberman worked on together a few years ago. But if Congress won’t act soon to protect future generations, I will. I will direct my Cabinet to come up with executive actions we can take, now and in the future, to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy.”
THE FACTS: Obama failed to get a global warming bill through Congress when both Houses were controlled by Democrats in 2010. With Republicans in control of the House, the chances of a bill to limit the gases blamed for global warming and to create a market for businesses to trade pollution credits are close to zero. The Obama administration has already acted to control greenhouse gases through existing law. It has boosted fuel-efficiency standards and proposed rules to control heat-trapping emissions from new power plants. And while there are still other ways to address climate change without Congress, it’s questionable regulation alone can achieve the reductions needed to start curbing global warming.

McCloud, here's another thing that was omitted from the definition of 'Liberal': defending blatant criminals. Re: Jan Schakowsky (from Wikipedia):
Husband's bank fraud and tax evasion convictions
On March 11, 2004, Schakowsky's husband, lobbyist Robert Creamer, the executive director of the Illinois Public Action Fund, was indicted in federal court on 16 counts of bank fraud involving three alleged check-kiting schemes in the mid-1990s, leading several banks to experience shortfalls of at least $2.3 million. In August 2005, Creamer pleaded guilty to one count of failure to collect withholding tax, and bank fraud for writing checks with insufficient funds. All of the money was repaid. Schakowsky was not accused of any wrongdoing. Schakowsky served on the organization's board during the time the crimes occurred, and Schakowsky signed the IRS filings along with her husband. U.S. District Judge James B. Moran noted no one suffered "out of pocket losses," and Creamer acted not out of greed but in an effort to keep his community action group going without cutting programs, though Creamer paid his own $100,000 salary with fraudulently obtained funds. On April 5, 2006, Creamer was sentenced to five months in prison and 11 months of house arrest. Creamer served his five-month incarceration at the Federal Correction Institute in Terre Haute, Indiana and was released on November 3, 2006.

I like wealthy people, they spend money that helps the economy. In fact, they comprise almost 40% of the total consumption in this country, and that means other people get hired and paid to produce goods or services, without being on the Santa Claus list. People who lack education about economics would rather tear them down, like the Bolsheviks did in the early 1900s'. The middle class and lower are the ones who spend on a consistent basis- for groceries, transportation, rent, etc. I can promise you that the wealthy are not spending on a daily basis in the same way. Most of my wealthy friends would agree. They all invest and the money they do spend is absolutely for themselves. They're not out there hiring people if they don't have to, and they certainly pay the ones who do work for them the absolute minimum. I suggest Mac, that you do some research too.

It must be hard for you every day to make reality fit your strange narrative. With horrific GDP, unemployment, debt, and every economic indicator at dangerously low values. The fact that wealthy people spend more money and buy more expensive things easily fits the assumption of nearly 40% of all consumption is made up of wealth people. Sure, total consumption is down, thanks in large part to the white house, but the percentages do not change, I know nonlinear thinking is hard for you, but think of it as a smaller pie with a piece that makes up 40% of the entire pie. By the way, money goes over seas to escape the war on wealth creation and could be better used here. But hey, you'd rather everyone is miserable like Havanna.

It is my understanding that In some emergency rooms in Illinois and elsewhere, parents are now being asked to leave the examing room in which they have accompanied a minor child and then the minor patient is asked if there are guns in their home. Does this not remind one of Nazi Germany where children were encouraged to spy on their parents. 1984 indeed.

Jim, I took one of my kids to the pediatrician today. I asked him and he said the doctor did not inquire about guns in our home (at least our pediatrician did not do this).

A little history: as most of you know, the Romans became corrupt as all socieities eventually do. The Germanic tribes were a jealous lot and were not happy just destroying Rome. They killed and burned until there was nothing left, no knowledge, no skills, no tradition and NO MONEY. From 400 to 1200 there wasn't much in Europe except a miserable, short and brutish life. Point being, just because you take from the haves doe not mean success and prosperity for the have-nots. Quite the opposite. My welfare depends on me not on how many wealthy people there are or are not and I know that governmental promises are a ruse and that taking from some to give to others will eventually lead to collapse. Caring for the weakest and poorest among us is our responsibility and we or our government should do that, but we are way beyond that now.

Sully,

I did not say forced. I said asked. but twisting words and twisted thoughts are a liberal's tools. as for health risks in the home, maybe patients should be asked about stairs or bleach or glass or power tools or plastic bags or ovens or dogs or .......or the danger of the day from which the state socialists will protect us from ourselves. If the government wants that information let them place someone there to ask the question. A physician's duty is not healthcare. It is medical care, to diagnose the problem presented and fix it if he can. The government barely pays for that much less spying for the state.

Sully...Kudos to you and RB for fighting the good fight against these rabid Sea-Monkeys...the likes of McClown and Sicky...and not to forget Jimbo and
D.Krud. I know it gets tiring attempting to clue in the eternally clueless. I say...let the losers wallow in their own arrogant ignorance. Actually...if you can stand back far enough...it is rather interesting and fun watching the CONservatives circle the drain. Some of the brighter ones know it...but most .... like this tank of rabid Sea-Monkeys haven't a clue and they are the funniest to watch. They will defend their ignorance to the bloody end. So...my advise...kick back and let them chew themselves to shreds...for what will ultimately be a no win situation. Again....kudos on your gallant attempt.

Sicky...Whatever did I say that gave you the idea I am back in Illinois? My iPad works in all 50 states best as I know...and...oh yeah...not to mention the world at large. I even VIDEO Skyped my friend in London today! Can you imagine that? You stone age creatures have no idea what the technological future holds, combine that with your typical CONservative knee jerk assessments, which, 9 times out of 10 are totally wrong...as in this case...and you come up with yet another insipid comment.
Do me favor...go away...far far away.

Vicki, maybe I missed it....but I don't think you ever told us how long 14 year old rape victims should spend in prison after being convicted of murder after having an abortion. If I recall you said something about the same time as anyone throwing their baby in the dumpster. Just how long? What about the accessories to the 'murder' like her Mom for driving her to the Clinic, the nurse, the Doctor? Maybe even the escorts who protect them from fanatics like you and Westboro Baptist Church. How long Vicki?

Well obviously the doctor gets the death penalty. It's okay to kill 'em after they're born. The driver of the car? I don't know. How long do accessories to murder typically stay in jail. The girl who had the abortion? Life in prison without parole so she can agonize over what happened for a good long time. As an extra, if the rapist is in the area, he should be the only one allowed visitation rights.

I dunno, RC; who not ask Blagojevich, Schakowsky, Jesse, Jr., or one of your other Lib Gods/Goddesses? My vote doesn't count anyway.

You never get around to answering. As you build your Tower Of London consider the ramifications of always asking that Abortion( even in the case of a 14 year old rape victim) be 'murder'.

So Sully needs "proof" unless he/she is personally aware unless of course a leftist says something which is always true. Ah, the glories of an open mind.

Well Jim, in the real world one usually relies on proof when an assertion is made. Such as the sky really isn't blue. It looks blue to our eyes because of the way light is refracted. Gravity is the force which keeps us all from floating into space. The earth revolves around the sun and that is why we have seasons. The moon revolves around the earth. We know these things because they have been proven, not because someone told us so and we blindly believe. That may be how you work, but most people require some kind of proof in order to believe something.

If you are convinced that abortion is not the taking of human life, the debate with you ends there. Otherwise, everything else you have to say is justification for human slaughter. Faith in God is not scientific, so I guess that leaves you and your friends without. Your souls are in my prayers.

McCloud, don't waste your time praying for their souls. they probably do not believe in God because they have not seen him/her personally and probably do not believe that humans have souls because they haven't seen a soul either.

Gosh Jim, isn't that what good Christians want to do though? Pray for one's soul so one can "see the light"? Not very Christian of you.

Well Vick, he's (she's) just calling 'em as he sees 'em. You make it so easy--
narrow-minded bigots who think they are better set themselves up for ridicule. Your ignorance knows no bounds and your hypocritical "Christianity" makes a farce out of religion. Congratulations.

If minimum wage needs to be increased for the poor, why not $35 per hour, that way folks that work at McDonalds can afford a home and make a living wage. Anyone who opposes this just doesn't have a heart.

McCloud may just be on to something; why stop at a paltry $9.00? Home health care workers should unionize and demand outstanding wages, raises and benefits also......or FLATLY REFUSE to care for the deluge of unhealthy Baby Boomers coming down the pipeline (that's the REAL reason for letting in the illegals....cheap labor to care for them!). Libs looooooove unions, right?
