Influential Film Critic, Roger Ebert, Dies

After a long battle with cancer, Ebert died Thursday, according to media reports.

Roger Ebert, the popular film critic who could weigh a movie's fate with a thumbs up or thumbs down, has died at age 70, according to media reports. The Chicago Sun-Times, the publication where Ebert reviewed movies for 46 years, reports Ebert died Thursday in Chicago following a long battle with cancer. Referring to Ebert as the nation's most influential and prominent film critic, the Sun-Times writes of Ebert's decades with the newspaper and also about the 31 years he spent reviewing movies on T.V. In a Sun-Times blog post on Tuesday, Ebert wrote he would be taking a "leave of presence" to deal with his health issues.  The "painful fracture" that made it difficult for me to walk has recently been revealed to be a cancer," Ebert wrote in …

I can say this, if Roger Ebert gave a movie thumbs down, I went to see it. Only because I was a young wipper snapper. In my ripe age of 40 (or 39 something) I will truly miss a Chicago icon such as him. Every time I would watch Gene and Roger I felt I was with them at the Highland Park movie theater. Thanks for the great memories! My condolences to his family, friends, and fans:( :)   more ›

The President is Coming!

Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America Comes to the Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum Saturday in downtown Grayslake.

The Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum will welcome Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln at 2 p.m. Saturday. This appearance will mark the official opening of the traveling exhibition, Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America. The exhibition opens at noon with Mayor Rhett Taylor giving a welcome at 1:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $3. The exhibit runs through June 16. The museum will offer extended hours: From March 23-June 16, visit Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Group tours are also welcome.

History of 'Star Trek' at CLC

Calling all "Trekkies"! College of Lake County sociology professors will present a free program on the history of 'Star Trek" Thursday night at the Aspen Drive Library in Vernon Hills.

Star Trek fans are invited to enjoy a trivia-filled, free presentation, “The History of Star Trek: From Concept to Screen,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21 at the Aspen Drive Library in Vernon Hills. The presenters, College of Lake County sociology instructors John and Maria Jose Tenuto, used Star Trek movie director Nicholas Meyer’s idea that “art thrives on limitations,” as a case study for researching the making of the famous 1967 episode, “Space Seed,” starring Ricardo Montalbán as the villain Khan. (The famous actor later reprised the role of Khan in the “Star Trek II” movie from 1982, directed by Nicholas Meyer. Using rare materials from the archives of UCLA and the University of Iowa, the Tenutos obtained permission to gather all the …

Byron Colby Barn's Early Music Series Season Ends Sunday

Catch the final concert of season for the Byron Colby Barn's Early Music Series with a performance by EnsAmble Ad-Hoc on Sunday, March 10.

Get transformed to 16th and 17th-century Spain when EnsAmble Ad-Hoc performs "El Villano al Tamboril" at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 10 at the Byron Colby Barn in Grayslake. Admission is $18 for adults at the door only (cash or check). To inspire early appreciation for the arts, children under 16 are admitted free of charge. On Sunday, EnsAmble Ad-Hoc will perform lively song-dances such as the villanos, romances (Spanish ballads) and villancicos. Their spirited interpretations of carefully crafted texts and music are from the Spanish Siglo d'Oro (Golden Age) works of Vásquez, Guerrero, Pisador and Aranies, along with anonymous settings of texts by Lope de Vega and other authors.
