Culver's of Grayslake recently held a day of giving for a local 13-year-old battling brain cancer at Lutheran General Hospital, and the turnout was an overwhelming display of community love and support. The fundraiser saw lines out the door most of the evening and stopped traffic for almost a mile outside the restaurant.
Joey Cambio is an eighth-grader at Grayslake Middle School, and two of his best friends approached Culver's of Grayslake owner Chris Searles to help support his battle. When Searles heard of Joey's story and mounting medical bills, he knew he had to help somehow. Not only did the restaurant owner dedicate 25 percent of the entire day's sales to give back, he also donated 100 percent of sales from a special custard flavor Joey created.
Joey's Boy Scout troop, along with others from the area, helped to serve meals throughout the night, and the Grayslake Fire and Police Department showed their support as well.
Joey has a Germinoma brain tumor and is currently undergoing chemotherapy every three weeks at Lutheran General Hospital. The night's success let to a donation of $4,000 to help his cause.
