Yingling Backed Bill to Freeze Tax Levy for Townships Passes Out of House

HAINESVILLE, Ill. – State Rep. Sam Yingling continued his fight to ease the burden for local taxpayers with a bill that mandates a freeze on 2014 tax rates.  House Bill 5311 passed out of the Illinois House of Representatives yesterday with bipartisan support.

“I was elected to fight for lower taxes,” said Yingling. “This legislation shows that by putting aside partisan squabbling and working together, we can take action to ease our property tax burden.  I commend my colleagues for their initiative and cooperation.”

The bill now moves to the Senate for their consideration of the proposal. The legislation would create a Township Property Tax Extension Freeze for the 2014 levy year for townships with a population of 100,000 or less that are located within a county that is subject to the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law (PTELL).

Yingling is quick to point out that this is just a drop in the bucket:  “I will not stop fighting until we see a major overhaul to Illinois’ tax code.  It’s egregious that we have among the highest property taxes and more taxing bodies than any other state in the country.”

In his previous position as Avon Township Supervisor, Yingling lowered township taxes levies by 22%. “With the cooperation of other elected officials, I was able to increase efficiencies, reduce unnecessary expenses and expand services,” said Yingling “In addition to cutting taxes, we generated record surpluses.  I’m proud to have the trust of my constituents and be able to take that fight to Springfield, where I keep pushing for much-needed tax cuts.”
