Yingling Reminds Residents in Need to Apply for State Home Energy Assistance

HAINESVILLE, Ill. – As cold weather approaches, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is reminding eligible residents that state assistance with winter heating bills is available through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

“As temperatures fall and home energy costs rise, family budgets can get very tight and force many to make very difficult choices,” Yingling said. “LIHEAP can help those in the greatest need cover the necessary costs of heating a home during colder months. I urge all eligible residents to apply for assistance as soon as possible.”

Seniors, individuals with disabilities and families with children under the age of five can apply for LIHEAP assistance now. All other households may begin applying on Friday, Nov. 1. Residents with a monthly household income below $1,436 for a household of one, $1,939 for a household of two, $2,441 for a household of three, $2,944 for a household of four or $3,446 for a household of five are eligible for assistance. Applicants must provide proof of total household income for the 30-day period before the application date, a copy of their heat or electric bill issued within the previous 30 days, proof of Social Security number for every resident in the house, and documentation of assistance received through other public programs such as TANF or SNAP. Assistance is available until funding runs out, and residents are encouraged to apply early.
