Yingling Sponsors Tax Cut to Provide Working Families, Businesses with Relief at Gas Pump

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In an effort to reduce high gas costs and ease the burden on working families and small businesses, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is sponsoring legislation to eliminate the sales tax on motor fuels.

“Illinois’ high gas prices are making it harder for many small businesses to expand and adding to the burden of working families who are already trying to make ends meet, and high state taxes are making a bad situation worse,” Yingling said. “Cutting some of the taxes that are contributing to our pain at the pump will create some much-needed relief.”

House Bill 3666, which Yingling is sponsoring in the House, permanently exempts motor fuels including gas, blended ethanol fuel and biodiesel fuels from the state sales tax. Nationwide trends examined by AAA reveal Illinois consistently has among the highest fuel costs in the country, and a recent study from the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability found some Illinois drivers pay an average of 62 cents in taxes for every gallon of gasoline.

In his first nine months as state representative, Yingling has fought for relief for working families and local employers, sponsoring legislation to repeal the 2011 income tax increase and opposing increased taxes, fees and utility rates.

“A lot of factors contribute to the cost of gas, but the state must stop adding to the burden of working families through higher taxes,” Yingling said. “I encourage my colleagues to join me in supporting this important legislation.”
