Fundfest Rocks the Night Away

D46 Education Foundation event entertained community members and school supporters this weekend.

Saturday's all-day Fundfest, hosted by the District 46 Education Foundation, had mixed results in terms of attendance but offered a solid music line-up that entertained people throughout the day into late evening.

"I'm the music guy. I figured if we can give people great music and get some interest in the Foundation, we'd be doing a good job," said event co-organizer Mike Landers.

Jane Landers, Mike's wife, sat at the entrance to the event which was held at Abel's Restaurant. They were ready to sign up volunteers and board members for the Foundation.

"The Foundation is being revitalized. A lot more people are interested. They are concerned about reductions and removal of programs. This is an opportunity to do something positive," said Landers.

D46 school board member Karen Weinert and former board member Colleen Wade attended the event.

"I absolutely support the Foundation's efforts.  This is a good cause," said Weinert.

Jazz and blues music dominated the day.

The opening act, Svelte Bobby & the Soulfixers, featured long-time Grayslake High School music teacher Paul "Full Nelson" Nielsen and an ensemble of experienced musicians.

The audience swelled when Lydian Concept, made up of former District 46 students, took the stage. These high schoolers are at the high end of the performance scale.

"I work with them as part of the Grayslake Jazz Combo Workshop (GJCW). Lydian Concept was formed through Chapin and Chapin, an academic and jazz program," said Nielsen, the performer's music teacher.

Sultry voiced Margaret Stewart of Prairie Crossing stepped in and stole the show with her bluesy renditions of jazz classics.

The event took off as the evening went on and the last two bands took center stage.

Housewreckin' Blues Jam, with Mike Landers on guitar, showcased harmonica player King Robinson and heart-wrenching, soulful songs.

Message Ensemble, featuring Ken Hall, closed the event.

"Attendance did pick up mid-evening and stayed strong through the end. Those who stayed for the Message Ensemble's set were treated to what can only be described as a world-class jazz set. Just unbelievable. And overall, I think everybody had a really good time," said Landers.

New D46 Education Foundation board member and D46 parent Bill Kornit attended the event.

"The music was great. We really enjoyed seeing the Grayslake High School students perform," said Kornit.

Kornit became involved with the Foundation while attending a recent informational meeting.

"This is a good way to help supplement what the teacher's can do. I'd say to anyone in the community who wants to contribute their time and expertise to the Foundation, you can make a difference," he said.
