Grayslake Library Briefs: Reuse a Shoe, Library Friends, Concerts

A look at events at the Grayslake Area Public Library.

Reuse a shoe

The Grayslake Library is hosting a shoe recycling and donation program
now through April 26. With sustainability in mind, the library is again partnering with SWALCO, and collecting shoes to be reused in two ways.

All brands of worn-out or unwanted athletic shoes will be recycled. They will be ground up and recycled into a material that will be used to create long-lasting sports surfaces like tennis courts, athletic fields, running tracks, carpet padding and playgrounds.

New or unwanted gently worn shoes of all kinds, including boots, slippers, sandals, flip-flops, dress shoes, etc. will be donated to a local charity.

Simply drop off your shoes in the library lobby, 100 Library Lane, in the shoe collection box.

Make an impact

Looking for a volunteer opportunity that makes a real impact?

Come to the Friends of the Library meeting from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10 at the library.

Learn how this dedicated group of volunteers takes donated used books and turns them into funding for programs such as the Summer & Winter Concert Series, LEGO Robotics and the Friday Night Film Series. Book sales are held twice a year and in addition to raising funds, provide the public with the opportunity to purchase quality books at a very low cost. Many hands are needed to make these a success and new volunteers are welcome.

Free concerts

The library is pleased to announce the upcoming Winter Concert Series which featues three concerts sponsored by the Friends of the Library:

Sunday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. – Concert for the New Year
Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. – Concert for Valentine’s Day
Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m. – Concert for Mardi Gras

The first in the concert series will feature Those Were the Days Radio Players, as they perform the episode "The Cheap Skate" from the old-time Burns and Allen Radio Show with special guest Jack Benny.

The audience will also learn how special effects were created for old-time radio.
