Grayslake Library Offers Ways to Go Green

Programs at the Grayslake Library are designed to help make a difference in the community.

By their very nature, libraries are an environmentally friendly organization as they are constantly reusing and recycling items over and over again. In addition to a number of other “green” efforts they participate in, the is currently offering an opportunity to participate in a couple of great programs and make a difference in your own community and beyond.

Reuse those Shoes!

Grayslake Library Hosts Shoe Recycling & Donation Program

The Library will collect shoes through Friday, April 27.

  1. Bring in your worn out and unwanted athletic shoes (any brand and any size) to the library to be recycled.  Only worn-out athletic shoes can be recycled.
  2. Donate new or your unwanted gently worn shoes of all kinds, including boots, work shoes, slippers, sandals, flip-flops, dress shoes, etc.

In conjunction with SWALCO, the library will collect these items through Friday, April 27. Simply drop off your shoes in the library lobby in the shoe collection box. Worn out athletic shoes will be ground up and turned into new sports surfaces and playgrounds, and other items like carpet padding. Gently worn and new shoes will be donated to people in need. Last year’s donated shoes were given to people in Joplin, MO who had been affected by the tornado last spring.  Contact the library or SWALCO to find out more about the program. You can make a difference.

DONATE AND SHOP! Friends of the Grayslake Library Looking for Books and other Donations for their Sales

Doing some spring cleaning? Have any books, audiobooks, DVDs or music CDs you’d like to donate? The Friends of the Library are looking for donations of these items for their book sales. Not only are we able to “reuse” and find new homes for previously loved books and other items, but the proceeds from the book sales support a number of different library programs, services, and initiatives.

Recent proceeds have been used to sponsor Winter and Summer Concert Series, Film Series and purchase defibrillators for the library. Your donation is tax deductible. There’s always an ongoing sale in the library lobby and don’t forget to mark your calendars for the big Spring Book Sale which will take place April 12-15, 2012.
