Strang Funeral: Grayslake Renames Road To Honor Strang Family

The village renamed Westerfield Place as David Strang Parkway in honor of the family's 113 years in business as the Strang Funeral Home

Grayslake recognized David Strang for his personal and business contributions to the village operating the successful more than 80 years by designating Westerfield Place as David Strang Parkway.

“This is in respect to their long-term commitment to this community. The business itself is almost as old as the Village of Grayslake,” Mayor Rhett Taylor said during a village board meeting Aug. 2. “It recognizes the village as business friendly as well as to recognize connections within the town.”

Strang is a third-generation member of his family who has run Strang Funeral Home. In 1954, he designed and initiated the building of its current facility at 401 Belvidere Road.

Dave Oberg, executive director of the Grayslake Heritage Center, said the family not only has a connection to Grayslake through its business but also as residents.

The Strang family has resided within the village more than 113 years, and David was born in their home at Westerfield Place. He has since played an active role in the community, supporting the Grayslake Youth Baseball team and the Grayslake Historical Society.

“The true character of a community can be found within people who call it home,” Oberg said. “Grayslake is fortunate to claim Strang as one of its own.”

“I shall treasure this gesture to the fullest extent in my heart," Strang said as he received the proclamation.
