Late-Season Snow Hits Suburbs

Area residents woke to a surprising sight this morning.
Snow? In May?
Yes, that appears to be the case as a light dusting of snow fell in communities early Friday throughout the suburbs and west into the Rockford and Dekalb area. Areas hit by snow include Crystal Lake, Mundelein, Streamwood, Gilberts and more. Snow was still observed falling in Crystal Lake as of 8:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service provides the following explanation as to why the late snowfall hit portions of the Chicago area:
A very cool Thursday Night set the stage, with temperatures in the 40s falling into the 30s in some places overnight. As temperatures cooled in the lowest few thousand feet of the atmosphere even more late overnight into early Friday morning, partially helped by saturating (a cooling effect) from the influence of a low pressure system overhead, snow reached a lower and lower altitude before melting. Eventually, it would begin reaching the ground just outside of the western Chicago metro around 5 a.m.
