Local Students Receive General Assembly Scholarships

Students from Grayslake and Gurnee won scholarships from State Rep. Sandy Cole's office.

Eight students residing in the 62nd Legislative District have been awarded Illinois General Assembly Scholarships from the office of State Representative Sandy Cole (R-Grayslake).

The awards are determined by a Scholarship Advisory Board composed of community business people, educators and social service personnel who review all completed applications. The criteria used by the Scholarship Advisory Board are school and community activities, academic achievement, personal responses in the application form and by reviewing the candidate’s letters of recommendation.

The eight students who won the awards live in Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Villa, Round Lake Heights and Ingleside, according to a statement from Cole's office. They are recent graduates of Warren Township High School, Grayslake Central High School, Grayslake North High School, Round Lake High School and Lakes Community High School.

“The members of the scholarship advisory board told me that the selection process was very difficult due to the outstanding qualifications of all the applicants,” said Cole. “My legislative office received over 100 application requests. The hard work and dedication put forth by all of these students to excel at the challenges offered both in the classroom and community is highly commendable.”

Scholarship applications for the 2012/2013 academic year can be obtained by contacting Representative Cole’s district office or by visiting www.repcole62.com after January 15, 2012. Applicants must reside in the 62nd District and are accepted or attend a state-funded Illinois university.

“I congratulate the scholarship recipients and I wish them the best in their continued pursuit for academic success,” added Cole. “Unfortunately, we are only allowed to award eight scholarships, but there are so many deserving students who applied that will have very bright futures.”
