Adopt-A-Highway Applications Accepted Through August

Residents and businesses have the opportunity to help keep Lake County's highways clean, one mile at a time.

If your business or organization is looking for a community service project, this may be the one for you. The Lake County Division of Transportation is now accepting applications for the Adopt-A-Highway Program. The program provides residents and businesses an opportunity to contribute towards a cleaner "greener" environment, one mile at a time.

For nearly 20 years, Adopt-A-Highway volunteers have removed litter from Lake County highways and bike paths. Year after year, this program continues to be a success thanks to the dedication of hard-working volunteers from various business, civic, not-for-profit, social and youth groups. During the Spring Enrollment period earlier this year, the program hit an all time high with 93% of available sections adopted.

When your group or business adopts a highway, the Division of Transportation provides high-visibility safety vests, trash bags and safety information. The group is responsible for litter removal, twice a year, from both sides of the adopted county highway. This experience promotes teamwork, helps the environment, and provides a valuable public service. Groups then receive recognition for doing so with commemorative signs bearing the group's name placed at their adopted location.

Enrollment for the Adopt-A-Highway program is open through August 31. Participants must be at least ten years of age and anyone younger than 18 must have adult supervision. You can see a list of available county highway sections here.
