Excessive Heat Expected This Week

Stay safe out there!

The National Weather Service is warning residents throughout Illinois of the excessive heat expected the next few days, especially on Thursday.

The temperature is forecast to reach 93 degrees today, June 27, and 99 on Thursday. The National Weather Service says the heat index will likely be between 100 and 110 degrees on Thursday.

The National Weather Service office in Chicago offers this advice:

"To minimize the threat of excessive heat exposure, take frequent breaks during any strenuous outdoor activity, preferably in an air-conditioned location. If possible, reschedule these activities during the cooler early-morning or evening hours. Stay hydrated with non-alcoholic fluids - preferably water - and wear light-fitting, loose clothes. Provide shelter from the sun and water for pets. Do not leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a minute."

The United States Environmental Protection Agency's AIRNow Program warns that the air quality today, June 27, could be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

"Active children and adults, and people with lung disease, such as asthma, should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors," the AIRNow Program advises on its website.
