Grayslake Piggly Wiggly Closing Saturday

Say good-bye to the Pig. Doors close 6 p.m. Saturday.

Most of the shelves are bare. The coolers are empty. The deli is dark.

The Grayslake Piggly Wiggly is all but out of business.

Tomorrow is the final day of operations. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There's not a whole lot left to choose from — jars of pasta sauce, canned fruits and veggies, cereals, kitchen gadgets, some toiletries and over-the-counter medications — but most of what is left is being sold at a 15 percent discount.

Some inventory was already transferred to Piggly Wiggly stores in Antioch and Zion.

Owner David Karczewski announced in August that his third store at 815 Center St. in Grayslake would go out of business due to failed negotiations with the building's landlord/owner, Vicky Kouantas, who plans to open her own store.

Farmer's Market Place is expected to open in April 2013. Piggly Wiggly will be the store's primary wholesaler for a variety of food and other items, but the fresh fruits and vegetables will be purchased from Chicagoland produce markets. In fact, the new store's produce department will be twice the size of the Piggly Wiggly.

Paul Butera, Piggly Wiggly Midwest chairman stated they are pleased with the new arrangement as wholesaler. “Customers will continue to receive aggressive weekly advertised specials along with the value offered in our store brand products.”

The closing of the Piggly Wiggly will affect roughly 40 full and part-time employees. A reported eight workers have been hired for Karczewski's other locations.
