Howl-a-Ween Fun for Dogs and Their Owners

Annual "pawty" at Central Bark in Grayslake raises money for charity.

Once again this year Rodger and Austin the husky took home the scariest costume award as Dracula and his pet Dogula. The cutest costume went to Bling the Pomeranian dressed as Paris Hilton. The most creative went to Koko, a jack russel pug mix, who accompanied her brother Callum, the alcoholic bum.

But the best overall was the French bulldogs Cagney and Lacey dressed as cops and Miss Dog the Chihuahua as the convict. Their owners also dressed the part, as a convict and a 1970's detective, said Laura Bloss, co-owner of Central Bark Doggy Day Care in Grayslake.

They sponsored the annual Howl-a-Ween "pawty" for dogs and their humans.

Approximately 70 people attended the event this year and raised $757, more than it has in the past, for Placing Paws Rescue in Libertyville. They help rescue all breeds of dogs and cats who are in high risk situations. They focus on saving animals who would otherwise be euthanized from rural shelters and finding them foster homes.

Although no dogs were adopted out during the party, there was interest in a few of the dogs.

The Howl-a-Ween event raised money for Placing Paws Rescue, while giving the dog owners and their pets a good excuse to interact and have fun.

"We chose the winners on originality and how the audience reacted when they walked the 'runway.' Our party went well because we were fully staffed to ensure the dog play groups were covered and other staff members were walking around and answering questions," Bloss said. "They all donated their time and we are so thankful for them. We love our staff!"

Cindy Falsted, a photographer who specializes in pets and their families, took pictures during the event. She is also a volunteer with Placing Paws.

Dorie the psychic, located in Grayslake, did readings on pets and their pet parents. "She received rave reviews," Bloss said. "I sat with her too and was impressed with her feedback."
