Residents' Opinions Differ on Possible Centennial Park Sale

What do you think about the proposal made by Emil's to purchase Centennial Park?

Village officials revealed this week that Emil's has submitted a proposal to purchase the Centennial Park property with the intention of using it for outdoor seating and a beer garden.

Readers have had a lot to say about this proposal, which has already received objections from a new group—Friends of Centennial Park—that formed to help save the park from being sold.

Some readers on Grayslake Patch and on Facebook agree that the park should not be sold.

"There is already outdoor dining at at least two spots in downtown Grayslake. The park should be maintained for its current use," said a reader. "If the village is going to allow Emil's to use the space I agree it should be on a lease basis, but including a percentage of revenue. Those who donated to create the park should be reimbursed by Emil's or the village for their out of pocket costs."

Another reader echoed those comments, saying, "If they let them buy it then who is going to pay back the people who donated funds to fix it up not that long ago?"

Yet another said that "selling it would be stupid. Lease it to them, evenings only, for a hefty fee. They should be being charged for its use already since they send all their smokers out there at night."

Other readers, however, are in favor of the proposal.

"I say let them buy it, especially since a new park is being added less than block away," a reader wrote.

Another said selling the property "would bring in some much needed additional tax revenue. Also, it's not really even a park. It's more of a large alleyway. Move the balloon animal man to the park by Bulldogs when it's done, and were all set."

"Emil's should be allowed to purchase the property," said another reader. "This area is only used during the Farmers market and the 6 other days of the week it's empty. I rarely see people there any other day of the week. Allow Emil's to use it to bring in more revenue. Plus, Grayslake is already building out the park area at the corner of Center and Whitney. Use this for the farmers market if you need the space."
