Halloween Memories - and a Sweet Treat

Who doesn’t have special memories about Halloween – as a kid and as a parent? The home made costumes we worked on for weeks...my favorite was my gypsy costume. I thought those giant hoop earrings I made out of mason jar rings were genius! Who can forget the smell of chocolate wafting out of the big bag of candy we would bring home? To this day, I like to take a sniff when the kids walk in the door with their loot. And perhaps the best part...dumping it ALL out on the floor to inspect each piece and trade with my sister (always thinking I got the better end of the deal). My parents said we were looking for defects - tiny tears in the wrappers, half opened pieces, any sign of tampering. Now that I'm the parent, I know the real reason for the inspection...scoping out what I might help myself to while the little goblins are at school :)

When I was a kid, I loved making my way from house to house, wondering what might be in that big bowl when the homeowner opened their front door. Could it be a full sized candy bar? (not often enough), a handful of pennies? (not a personal favorite) or maybe some Tootsie Rolls (mom's favorite, so that would make her happy). Even with all of the delicious options, nothing could ever top a stop at Mrs. Bennett's house to pick up one of her homemade popcorn balls. Usually orange, very sticky, super yummy, and because we knew her, no need to inspect - or share with mom and dad!

Memories like that are the reason I like to make sure we have something a little extra special to hand out to the kids in our neighborhood on Halloween. Of course, I stock up on the mini candy bars and Twizzlers...what would I eat for dinner otherwise? But it's fun to know that as the ghosts and ghouls, firemen and fairies, are making their way around the neighborhood, hopefully they are looking forward to seeing what cookie might be waiting for them when they get to our house. Will it be a ghost? A pumpkin? A big green Frankenstein? Magically it will appear and have their name on it, and most likely it won't make it home for inspection either.
