Huge news swept the nation last night surrounding the death of al Qaeda's top leader.

The announcement that Osama bin Laden’s had been killed by military troops in Pakistan continues to monopolize the news today.

Media outlets locally and throughout the World have been reporting on details from the raid that ended with bin Laden's death, providing reactions from families who lost loved ones in the Sept. 11, 2011 attacks and looking at what this could mean for the nation's security.

Here is a round-up of some of those articles:

  • DETAILS ON THE RAID: An article appearing on the Chicago Tribune's website Monday provided details about the raid on bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, which was led by the CIA and carried out by special operations troops. Obama OK’d the raid midday Sunday and CIA officials watched the attack over video, according to the article. The article goes on to state that the CIA had been monitoring bin Laden's compound since August. Bin Laden was shot while shooting back at troops and was later buried at sea.  An Associated Press article provides an account from Pakistani officials of the raid.

  • FEARS OVER SECURITY: Reuters is reporting on fears from Washington over attacks on the U.S. following the killing of al-Qaeda’s top leader. Messages suggesting revenge on the U.S. appeared on Islam and Arabic language forums, according to the article. The article also notes that the United States and much of Europe are “on a constant alert for an attack by al Qaeda or affiliated extremist organization.”

  • REACTIONS FROM LOCAL 9/11 FAMILIES: The Daily Herald reports on the reactions following bin Laden's death of suburban families who lost loved ones in the September 11, 2011. A former West Dundee resident, Marion Kminek, told the Daily Herald her daughter, Mari-Rae, died in one of the planes that crashed on 9-11.   • BIN LADEN'S HIDEOUT: This Associated Press video, posted on YouTube.com, features an AP bureau chief in Islambad, Pakistan, talking about whether Pakistani officials may have known of bin Laden’s whereabouts. The Washington Post reports that bin Laden's hideout was in a town known for tourism and the wealthy and also a hub for training military troops--a far cry from a mountainous cave where bin Laden had been rumored to be hiding.
    • ACCIDENTAL LIVEBLOG OF RAID: A Reuters article on the Chicago Tribune reports the “accidental" liveblogging of bin Laden’s raid by a Pakistani up late on his Twitter account. Sahaib Athar, according to the article, tweeted that he heard a loud bang that rattled his windows. Two hours later, according to the article, Athar reported on Twitter again: “Uh oh, now I’m the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it,” according to the article.
    • LOCAL POLITICAL OFFICIALS REACT: The Northwest Herald provides the following account of local political leaders reactions following the death of bin Laden in this article.
