Experience Afrofest, Jamaicafest and Sounds of the Caribbean

Food and music of varied cultures comes to Greenbelt Forest Preserve, Sunday.

Experience the dance, food, music and market of local and distant cultures and countries at the Greenbelt Cultural Center’s . The event takes place from 3 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 7, at the Greenbelt Forest Preserve, Shelter B, located across the street from the Cultural Center, 1215 Green Bay Rd. in North Chicago. 

This free event combines the annual festivals of Afrofest and Jamaicafest: Sounds of the Caribbean into one fun festival. For your comfort, bring a blanket or lawn chair. Free parking is available on the site. 

Two stages will keep the entertainment flowing with the sounds of R&B, gospel, reggae, jazz and more. Band headliners include Universal Xpressions playing reggae and calypso at 4:30 p.m. Something Special will play a Gospel set at 3:30 p.m. and R&B tunes at 5:30 p.m.

Ethnic foods such as jerk chicken and soul food will be available for purchase. The market will feature clothing, jewelry and other imported specialties. Poetry readings, rap, limbo contests, dancing and kids’ activities will round out the day.
