31st Annual CLC Student Art Competition - Opening Night Reception

Join us for the opening reception of the 31st Annual College of Lake County Student Art Competition. Awards will be presented at 8:15 pm. The Mojo Daddies will entertain with their own brand of Rock and Roll, Blues and Pop. This juried exhibit by current art students at CLC will feature painting, drawing, computer graphics, photography, ceramics, jewelry, digital media and sculpture. The show continues through May 12.

Learn to recognize, enjoy and appreciate the resident and migratory birds of northeastern Illinois. Bring binoculars. All sessions are held at colorful natural areas within an hour's drive of your home. The instructor will contact you with detailed directions on the location of the first class just before the course begins.

 

Parent & Child Gardening - Kids Dig It

Gardening with children means putting aside grown-up views and getting to kid-level where everything is new and exciting. Explore with your child opportunities to engage with nature through creative landscape features and kid-friendly plants that are touchable and edible. Registration fee covers one adult and one child. An authorized adult must accompany each child (grade 1 - 5).

 

Friends of the Grayslake Library's Spring Book Sale

Find a treasure trove of books, movies, music and more – all at bargain prices. Proceeds from the sale support a number of library programs, services and initiatives. Stop in the library lobby now through the end of the sale for a special silent auction and bid on unique special items.

 

Scenic Nature Hikes: Spring

Explore a wide variety of fascinating habitats in the northeastern Illinois area. Learn to recognize and name trees, shrubs, grasses, wildflowers, birds and other animals. Sessions are off campus at interesting areas within one hour's drive. You must provide your own equipment. The instructor will contact you with directions prior to first meeting. 

 

West Coast Swing @ Dress Up & Dance!

Enjoy WCS with Dawn. Check in at 7 p.m. Lesson runs from 8 pm - 9 pm. Open dance, all styles, from 9pm until 11pm. This is a non-alcohol dance club with a beverage bar for $1.

Church of St. Mary Confession

The Church of St. Mary, a regal and grandiose church located near downtown Lake Forest, is a full-service Catholic Church led by Father Michael McGovern. The Church's active and vibrant community includes a Catholic school and youth ministries and education. They have an abundance of social and religious programs, including the COR Youth Ministry, the Guild of St. Mary, the Metro847 College & Young Adult ministry and their religious education program.

The Church of St. Mary's provides several unique programs for Catholics in Lake Forest and the surrounding Chicago area, such as their pastoral care for divorced Catholics and SPRED, a religious education program designed for those with developmental disabilities.

Weekend mass services are held Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. 

 

Women’s Health Advisory Council of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital Hosts Eighth Annual “House Calls”

The Women’s Health Advisory Council will host its signature event, “House Calls,” bringing to the community an intimate night of discussion and presentations on a broad range of healthcare topics. Eight physicians and NLFH’s Chief Nurse Executive will offer a unique view into healthcare for all ages.  

Topics include:

  • How Magnet Recognition benefits Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital
  • Fact and Fiction About a Woman’s Heart
  • OB Hospitalists: Delivering Something Special
  • New Advances in Stroke Prevention and Aortic Aneurysm Treatment
  • Your Community Emergency Department: From Pediatrics to Geriatrics
  • Northwestern Dermatology in the North Suburbs: An Update

House Calls is an annual event of the Women’s Health Advisory Council. The goal of the event is to present vital health and wellness information and to offer access to some of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital’s leading physicians and clinical partners in an informal setting.

Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served, followed by presentations, dinner, dessert and musical entertainment. The Women’s Health Advisory Council is a volunteer board composed of women from the Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital community.  Its mission is to promote the importance of health issues through education, events and activities. 

 

SCOPE Midwest 5th Annual Fundraiser

SCOPE (Summer Camp Opportunities Provide an Edge) Midwest will hold their 5th Annual Fundraiser to provide “camperships” to send local economically disadvantaged children to not-for-profit overnight camps throughout the Midwest this summer. The 2012 Benefit will be held at the Westin North Shore in Wheeling. The evening will include cocktails, dinner, dancing and a silent auction.

 

JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound w/East of Edens Soul Express DJs

JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound take over a 19th century Chapel to preach the word of pure Chicago soul. The East of Edens Soul Express DJs get the party started in Lake Forest College, at the Reid Hall Chapel promptly at 8 p.m. Capacity is limited to 200 people only, so come early. The concert is free for all. Join us in a celebration of music and soul.

 

Chili Cookoff for Charity

Lake Bluff Brewing Company proudly sponsors its first annual Chili Cook-off to benefit the Shields Township Food Pantry. Enter your famous chili for a chance to win a free growler fill every month for the next year. Two winners will be selected by a panel of judges and by popular vote. Come out and sample some of the area's best chili, drink a couple beers, and support our local food pantry for those in need.

Fine print... Entrants are required to bring at least one gallon of chili in an electric crock pot with serving spoon/ladle, pre-cooked and ready to serve with desired accompaniments/fixins. LBBC will provide the bowls, soup spoons, and power for the crock pots. $25 entry fee includes one free bottomless cup for sampling others' chili. Maximum 12 entrants. 

 

False Confessions: Do THey Happen?

Juan Rivera, Jed Stone, and Rob Warden will participate in a panel discussion titled, "False Confessions: Do They Happen? How? Why?" at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 15 at the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel at Lake Forest College.

Juan Rivera is a former inmate who was convicted on the basis of a false confession. He was recently released after 19 years in prison when the Appellate Court overturned his 1993 rape and murder conviction of 11-year-old Holly Staker. Jed Stone is a criminal defense attorney, and Rob Warden is the Executive Director of the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law.

This event is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Lake County, Lake Forest College Ethics Center, Lake Forest College Politics Department, Lake Forest College Legal Studies Program, and AAUW Waukegan Area Branch. The public is invited to attend.

 

Cathedra - English Choral Music

Cathedra, an acclaimed vocal ensemble based at Washington National Cathedral, will perform 4 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at The Church of the Holy Spirit as the church concludes its long-running Music in the Nave series.

The program, A Corner that will be Forever England, will include works by such classic composers as William Byrd as well as more modern compositions that reflect the interests of Michael McCarthy, National Cathedral’s music director and principal choirmaster. McCarthy founded the London Oratory School Schola before his National Cathedral appointment in 2003. Schola is recognized as one of London’s premier boys’ concert choirs, performing regularly on the London concert platform and in studio recordings.

The Cathedra ensemble was formed for Washington National Cathedral’s 2010 Lenten services and includes singers from the Washington, D.C., area and elsewhere. The Episcopal seat of Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, the cathedral has a mission to serve as a catalyst for reconciliation and interfaith dialogue.

Music in the Nave performances are free of charge, with free-will offerings accepted. 

 

Cook Library District to host a SPRING BOOK SALE

The Friends of the Cook Memorial Public Library District are pleased to announce the return of their spring book sale! It will be held at the Aspen Drive Library, 701 N. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills. It begins on Friday, April 13 from 6 - 9 p.m., with a free Preview Sale for Friends' members only. Non-members can join at the door for $5. The sale will continue on Saturday, April 14 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with free admission, and Sunday, April 15 from 1 - 4 p.m. with free admission and a reduced bag sale.

The sale includes thousands of books at affordable prices in a variety of genre's for children and adults including some high quality, special collection books. More than 50% of the books being sold are community donated books with the remainder having been weeded from the library's collection of older and/or less popular books. All proceeds will go towards the Friends' of the Library.

Join the Community Youth Network for their 9th annual 5K or 10K Walk/Run event Take a Step for Kids. Registration is from 8–8:45 a.m. It is chip timed and medals will be awarded. T-shirts are given to the first 500 participants. Proceeds support CYN and the National Child Abuse Prevention month.
