Unity Walk for Boston to be Held in Central Park Saturday

The walk/run will start at 9 a.m.

The Grayslake Running Club will hold a Unity Run Saturday morning to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.

The solidarity walk/run will start at Central Park at 9 a.m.

Lupe Gallardo-Kathrens, president of the Grayslake Running Club, decided to organize the event after running the Boston Marathon. She had just crossed the finish line when she heard the explosions.

Saturday's walk/run will allow people to walk a one-mile loop around the park or run a few loops, or about three miles. The walk and run will travel eastbound. Gold and yellow balloons will mark the starting point near the flag post/concession stand, Gallardo-Kathrens said.

She has been working with the village and Grayslake Police Department to coordinate the event. She said participants can park at the Grayslake Aquatic Center, but she encourages people to walk, run, bike or car pool because parking is limited.

All participants will be required to sign a waiver and must bring their own water bottles. She said course support and aid stations will not be available.

Gallardo-Kathrens also encouraged participants to wear a race shirt or blue and gold, which are the Boston Marathon colors.
