Local Veterans To Be Remembered With Roses This Memorial Day

Wildwood, IL – May 21, 2014: On Saturday, May 24th, from ten until one p.m., 250 free roses will be handed out at Designs On You to be laid at the gravestones of local veterans and they are enlisting the help of customers and Lake County Citizens. This local business has also arranged for 150 additional roses to be handed out and placed at the gravestones of veterans at Arlington National Cemetery, on Memorial Day, by volunteers with the Memorial Day Flowers Foundation. The Foundation organizes the distribution of hundreds of thousands of roses to be placed at the gravestones of veterans at Arlington Cemetery and around the country. Designs On You is sponsoring this local tribute.

“I’m so proud to be a part of this movement,” said Trudy Salinas, owner of Designs On You Embroidery, Screenprinting, Spiritwear and Gifts, 33277 N. U.S. Highway 45, Wildwood. “My Pop was in the Marine Corps during World War II. This is our first year participating in the movement, and it is even more meaningful to me now that he passed away last week.” Salinas reflected and said, “We plan on participating in this event every year in honor of his memory…Semper Fidelis!”

Fox Valley Scholarship pageant princesses will be helping with handing out the flowers at this local embroidery and spiritwear shop, along with Miss Chain O’ Lakes.  Jessa, Miss Prairie State’s Outstanding Teen, immediately contacted the store and organized her pageant sisters to help hand out the roses. When asked why she was so passionate about helping with this event Jessa said, “This means a lot to me. My grandpa and great-uncle both served in the Navy and a good friend of our family gave his life for our freedom.” The teen then commented, “We need to show our support and show thanks to their families for giving their all for our freedom.”

Local Grayslake Boy Scout Troop 96 has also partnered with Designs On You to distribute four dozen roses, one for each scout, at the Grayslake cemetery Saturday morning during a flag ceremony they hold. “The Boy Scouts were the first to take us up on our offer to reserve flowers for a group,” said Salinas. “I was also very touched by Jessa, who contacted me very quickly to see if she could help. That shows a lot of character in a kid.”

Salinas invites the citizens of Lake County to take part in something really meaningful this Memorial Day by picking up a free rose and remembering their own veteran, or adopting one for the day. With a smile she remarked, “We’re hoping that the flowers go quickly and we’re excited to see photos that people post of all the veterans we helped to be remembered this Memorial Day.” Then with a laugh she said, “Well, if we don’t give them all away, I’ve already warned my husband that he’s on gravestone duty with me!”
