Fundraiser Underway for Family of Local Girl

A fundraising page on the GiveForward website is dedicated to raising money for the family of Mireya "Mia" Cardenas, who drowned in August.

A special fundraiser is underway to raise money to help a local family cover the funeral expenses for their 9-year-old daughter.

Mireya "Mia" Cardenas drowned in Fox Lake in late August. The Round Lake girl was a student at Fremont School in Mundelein and was also a cheerleader with the Lake County Stallions.

A local resident, Tara Quinn, decided to set up a fundraising page on the GiveForward website to help the Cardenas family.

"Mia and her family live near my home and when I heard of this tragic accident, I wanted to help," Quinn wrote on the website.

Quinn said she never met Mia and didn't know her family.

"But that did not stop me," said Quinn. "Mia's passing touched my home so much that we have taken action."

So far, the "Mia's Memory" fundraising page has received $2,355 through 51 donations. There are just two weeks left to donate to the campaign.

Quinn also partnered with a Wildwood business, Designs on You, and held a fundraiser for the Cardenas family Nov. 9.
