Over $10K in Gold Coins Donated in Lake County This Holiday Season

A total of 19 gold coins totaling $10,493 have been donated to Salvation Army locations in Lake County after seven gold Swiss Francs were left Wednesday in a kettle at a Libertyville Jewel Food Store, according to the Daily Herald.

Four gold coins worth $1,300 each were dropped into a Salvation Army red kettle on Dec. 4 outside the Lake Zurich Wal-Mart with an additional gold coin dropped in the same kettle on Dec. 5, according to the Chicago Tribune.

It is tradition for gold coins to be left in Salvation Army kettles during the holiday season but those were the first gold coins ever left in Lake Zurich, according to the article.

Anonymous donors also left gold coins — worth $497 each — in kettles in Grayslake, Waukegan and Round Lake, according to the Chicago Tribune.
