Grayslake Colts Cheerleaders Win Big at State

Congratulations, everyone!

—Submitted by Michelle Whaples.

More than 125 Grayslake Colts cheerleaders qualified for the Illinois Recreational Cheerleading Association's state championships Dec. 6-8.

The squads ranged in age from 5-14. Our Pee Wee Cheer (third and fourth grades), Varsity Black Cheer (eighth grade), JV Poms (fifth and sixth grade) and Varsity Poms (seventh and eighth grade) all gave fantastic performances in the first round of competition. The JV Cheer (6th grade) and Varsity Green Cheer (7th grade) advanced to the finals. The Mascots (K and 1st grade) bypassed the first round and went straight to the last day.

On Dec. 8, IRCA had the red carpet out for the best of the best. The girls did not disappoint their fans. JV Cheer, led by Head CoachThayna Schuerman, brought home the 2nd place state trophy in the sixth grade medium division. Varsity Green Cheer, led by Head Coach Elizabeth Hoker, brought home 3nd place in the seventh grade medium division. The Colts’ littlest cheerleaders (our Mascots, led by Head Coach Jennifer Mertins) came home with the 1st place trophy in the first grade large division category!

“We are so proud of all of our girls, coaches and junior coaches,” said Megan Ruenz, director of Grayslake Colts Cheer and Poms. “We have never had so many squads qualify for state. This is also the first year that three squads have advanced to the final round and brought home the big trophy!”
