Westlake Christian Academy Fitness Challenge and Family Picnic

Westlake Christian Academy in Grayslake celebrated the start of another school year with its annual  family picnic on Saturday, August 24. WCA families and friends gathered to share summer memories, enjoy friendships, and eat delicious food. However, this year brought a new and exciting fitness challenge.

Last May, Westlake PE teacher, Mrs. Vicky Flemming, had an idea to keep students active over the summer, a marathon! Students in grades 1-6 were encouraged to accumulate 25 miles of running or walking throughout vacation. Those who completed the task, and logged the miles, were invited to finish the final 1.2 miles of the marathon at the start of the family picnic. Twenty students rose to the challenge and could be seen running down Lake Street, to complete their goal.  As they crossed the finish line, onlookers cheered, and the runners received a finisher’s medal as a token of their accomplishment.

The focus on fitness was an excellent addition to a day already filled with fun for children of all ages!
