A Different Kind Of Homecoming

Event thanked veterans for their service, including those recently returned from Afghanistan as well as Vietnam veterans who enjoyed a long-overdue welcome home.

"It is wonderful to be welcomed back," said Mike Lee, a Vietnam veteran who served with the Air Force in Vung Tau. "At the time when we first returned from the war, there was nothing like this. There was nothing but disgrace."

He was one of several veterans from all wars welcomed home on Jan. 8 during a special community event in Grayslake.

"It's good to see the troops being recognized for their service," Lee said. "I think the legacy of the Vietnam War is that military members are now appreciated for what they have done. It is very gratifying."

Community members, politicians, members of the local fire and police departments and residents all came out to say "Thank You" to all veterans from any war.

The idea for the event came to Joyce Campbell, insurance agent and director of The Oasis, Grayslake Youth Center, after President Barack Obama called for the withdraw of troops from Iraq.
