Grayslake PTO treasurer accused of stealing funds, just posted by one of the papers I freelance for: http://newssun.suntimes.com/news/15127002-418/pto-treasurer-accused-of-taking-grayslake-school-funds.html

Nothing funny about the link I posted, that's for sure. The kids in this district deserve better and one way or another, it has to and will start happening. A huge thank you to all the hardworking and honest people who are in this district, and a reminder that even though people are innocent until proven guilty, I was told repeatedly there is allegedly overwhelming evidence in this instance above.
HM September 14, 2012 at 03:19 PM
The person who is charged was very involved in Woodview's PTO as well. Sort of makes you wonder if any of these activties were going on there as well. This makes me very sad. Stealing from the kids when the district is so strapped for money is terrible. If these allegations are true, I hope she is punished to the extent of the law. My kids attended Frederick when she was doing this, so I feel as if she has stolen from me personally. I'm sure I'm not alone.

Every time you think things at D46 can't get more disgusting, they do. Unbelievable.
GoBlue September 14, 2012 at 04:10 PM
CCSD 46 definitely has its issues, but this is not the fault on anyone but one selfish individual and should not reflect at all on the district itself as far as I am concerned. This could happen in any school district and any PTO.

I didn't see anything in that article that was based on facts provided to the author from the state. I don't know this woman, if she did or didn't do it. I saw a terrible article in which things like overwhelming evidence are said. A judge (or jury) decides on the evidence. We can all speculate but as Tim stated innocent until proven guilty. Warrants are issued because there is probable cause to show that there is some evidence of a crime and ther person listed is the person involved. I don't presume to know what happened. It may all be true. Parts may be true. Things may explainable. I don't know. I hope it sounds worse than it is.

Please stay on topic. I have posted a new story for readers to make comments related to the charges against former Frederick PTO treasurer Elizabeth Bako. http://grayslake.patch.com/articles/frederick-pto-treasurer-charged-with-feloy-theft

Let's hope this is not true about Lisa. Lisa is a wonderful person and has been very active in the schools. She was attacked by the same people who attacked District 46 over a year ago. Seems like she became a target when she spoke up on here and elsewhere. Sad if it is true. Tim, was the article about the murders the only concern you had about the book? Or are there other articles that should not be in the book. Why would they put the murders in a textbook is a concern. Any news on this yet?
Jane M. September 14, 2012 at 04:58 PM
I am going to reserve judgment until the end for Lisa. I truly find this hard to believe. She has done so much for District 46. You can't help wonder if District 46 isn't being set up. Attacking anyone and everyone seems to be the agenda. Lisa has children in the district. She lives in Grayslake. She is a great member of the community. Her track record for years has been nothing but great. Something doesn't add up.

Tim, I was not responding to you, but at the title of this article. Please look at the reply following.
Lennie Jarratt September 14, 2012 at 05:29 PM
The school board in D46 is a direct reflection of the administration. The leadership running the district is completely self indulgent and is using the district as it's own jobs program for friends and family. Their actions show their priorities are not about the education of the children.
Softball Jim September 15, 2012 at 02:46 AM
Lennie, once again the BOE does not run the PTO. They are aeperate. The PTO is all volunteer. Stop inferring that this is connected. Cause if you were to look closely Lisa is good friends with Shannon Smiegliski.
Lennie Jarratt September 15, 2012 at 03:07 AM
Hey SJ, this article is about the school board and my comment is completely about the school board here. I wasn't the one mentioning the PTO. Several others did though. You may want to revise your comment and call them out instead. You'd be more accurate then.
Softball Jim September 15, 2012 at 03:27 AM
Lennie you are absolutely correct. That comment should have and was ment for the other article where you made those type of remarks
Tara Strain September 15, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Softball Jim, Let's fits remember that Ms. Bako should be considered innocent until proven guilty. I am certain that someone like Sue Facklam would have insisted on the same, until she was actually found guilty of a class four felony. Let's also remember that Facklam, Garcia, and Bako were all best friends back in the 2011 election days; I only know this because I saw the pictures of them waiting to celebrate with one another in the newspaper, I personally do not know any of them. Finally, does every unknowing friend of a criminal make them an accomplice or involved? If you believe this to be true, I only assume you do based on your reference above regarding Ms. Smiegliski and Ms. Bako, then you should probably go turn yourself in too. I don't know you, but I'm certain somehow, somewhere, you (and all the rest of us) are connected to someone who has made some pretty bad, probably illegal choices as well.
Softball Jim September 15, 2012 at 01:33 PM
Tara, you are making my point! In Lennies other posts he is inferring that this is all connected to the school board. Which it is not! I have not placed any guilt by on Bako. Just simply trying to make a casual connection to someone he supports.

Poll question was a challenge for me to answer one question on all three boards (Charter school is just a school within Woodland district). Each school board has the same requirements but the flexibility to organized the open meetings agenda. D46 holds one meeting to discuss and vote. D127 holds two types of meetings; one for discussion and vetting out items that move to board and then the board meeting for action. Either are acceptable. Understanding the 1359 pages of the Illinois School Code takes time to learn. Board members who have been on for 4 years may not understand the whole process. Board members who have been on for 8 years are starting to get it and members who have been on longer than 8 years get the school code and understand the process and role. The board member hires one person and provides governance and authority over the administrative process of running the school. Budget season is upon us, tax levy season is coming up and election season is about to start (9/28). Being a public servant is rewarding. Take the D127 survey to provide feedback (only through 9/28). Attend your board meeting (all types) and learn. Ask questions, provide feedback and learn.

PC TriMommy, I think your right. A charter school is either an entity within the local school district(s) or it's own entity and I don't believe Woodland or Fremont districts applied for the charter and Illinois State Board approved the charter school which made it's own entity however reading the school code still seems the local districts can propose changes, include revoking a charter, but the power looks to be at the Illinois State Board. The funding has been a matter discussion and how Prairie Crossing funding at the state level impacts the local district's state funding. I don't think I would want the State of Illinois to mandate a charter school when the local schools provide a quality education as I believe Woodland does. I thought at the time the Prairie Crossing school was unique and interesting and the funding impacts were not fully understood and even so didn't impact me in Grayslake school districts. I also assumed the local districts wanted it. If the state were to change the funding formula then I think all charter school state funding would then be an impact to all school districts. State politicians would argue it is a funded mandate (when State forces a charter schools). Woodland school board would argue it is an unfunded mandate and State diverts Woodland designated funds to the charter school to make it a funded mandate. Title 23, Part 650 will define how charters are govern.

TriMommy - Please read the comment I made above. It was meant for another article. However, Texas Tara Strain made my point for me. I feel the same way about the school board. They are a bunch of idiots. They can't move sideways, let alone backwards. The entire board needs to go. From Surroz to Evans. Gone Gone Gone !
Softball Jim September 15, 2012 at 09:47 PM
Sorry that was supposed to say Forwards not backwards. (Who's the idiot now !)

I've lived in Grayslake the past 25 years to keep my kids in the same Grayslake schools, to find out after I bought east of Allegheny,my kids would go to Woodland.so don't know much about dist 46, never was happy with Woodland or GLHS in addressing a bullying issue with my son in the late '90's-01. Yet every year my taxes are raised and it's for the schools...the amounts are outrageous! I can look at my tax bill & not have a problem at all where all the other taxes go, but the schools?really?they were never that good for my kids-suggested to my oldest in HS in the late 80's to drop out & neither Woodland nor the High School ever addressed the bullying of my son from 1995-01 when the school board voted to have him..the victim..expelled for soph. year..while the bullies walk free...the only person who cared was the bus driver at woodland!! This all after putting him in private school for 8th grade and addressing the high school of the problem before he started there. So maybe I'm a bit bitter, but then I hear these stories of dist. 46 and se my ever-rising taxes and I real feel something is wrong with this community that I keep hearing is debt free.& then I see all their "beautification" to downtown Grayslake, most of which was unnecessary, but as they claim, will higher our property values..okay, now, how about helping out the schools since you have so much excess money and lowering our tax burdens so we can and will want to stay in Grayslake to see our property values rise!!

I would love to attend the school or village board meetings that would listen to our issues and to hear theirs, as someone mentioned we should. I went on line and was confused about which meetings would be best to go to..if anyone could post dates and times for the meetings we should be attending, I would really appreciate it!! Thanks!
