Here are 10 good reasons that Grayslake should allow a modest number of backyard hens:
1. Homegrown eggs taste better than chicken factory eggs.
2. Once you get started, you will save money by producing your own eggs.
3. Most store-bought eggs are laid by hens that are given antibiotics which cause abnormal growth in hens and also contribute to obesity in human consumers.
4. Buying feed and other supplies from local stores helps the local economy more than buying eggs from national food chains.5.
Raising your own chickens makes you more resilient to cope with an inevitable future with unavailable cheap fossil fuel.
6. Backyard food production of all kinds helps to combat climate change.
7. Raising chickens for egg production is an excellent activity to teach children responsibility and the facts of life.
8. Hens (although hard to toilet train) make good pets and as such have therapeutic value for children and adults.
9. By allowing backyard chickens, Grayslake would demonstrate that it is a more progressive and less stodgy community than its neighbor to the north which recently vetoed chickens.
10. You neighbors will love you when you give them fresh eggs for time to time.
