Crime Alert Issued by Village

Notification system provides details of recent "crimes of opportunity."

***CRIME ALERT***

The following information was sent out by the Village of Grayslake Community Notification System, detailing the recent arrest of a burglary suspect:

Police arrested a suspect in a string of residential burglaries that have occurred at homes in the village. Xavier I. Cruz, 18, 536 Pheasant Ct., Grayslake was located and taken into custody by Grayslake detectives on March 22 at approximately 9 p.m. Cruz is charged with two counts of Attempted Burglary to Motor Vehicle and one count of Residential Burglary. All three incidents occurred Jan. 17 in the Chesapeake Farms subdivision in the early morning hours, Grayslake Police said.

During the past six weeks, five residential burglaries have occurred at homes in the village.

The incidents have all occurred in the early morning hours between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Several neighborhoods have been affected and no geographic pattern is apparent, but each incident was the result of a door left unlocked, according to police. The offender(s) committing these property crimes are targeting residences that back up to bike paths or secluded wooded areas.

The reminded all residents to be diligent about locking their doors and ensuring that valuables are secured in closed garages and vehicles are locked. They stated that a small preventative effort may help residents avoid becoming a victim of one of these crimes of opportunity.
