The Grayslake Police Department and Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team are investigating a Monday morning semi truck crash that killed a 61-year-old Gurnee man.
Rex Smith was pronounced dead at at Advocate Condell Hospital, said Grayslake Police Chief Phillip Perlini.
Perlini said Smith's semi truck drove off the roadway and struck a tree on the 800 block of Route 83 at 7:30 Monday morning. Grayslake Fire Department paramedics transported Smith to Advocate Condell.
"The Lake County Coroner's Office is investigating the cause of death," said Perlini.
Route 83 was closed for about three hours as officials investigated the crash and removed the vehicle, Perlini said.
Illinois State Police are assisting in the investigation because a commercial vehicle was involved, he added.
