Police: Charges Pending Against Man Who had BB Gun Near Gages Lake School

The incident occurred near Laremont School on Gages Lake Road, police said.

Criminal charges are pending against a 17-year-old man who was taken into custody Wednesday in Gages Lake following reports of a man with a gun near Laremont School.

Lake County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Sara Balmes said officers were called to Laremont School, 17934 W. Gages Lake Road, at about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. Balmes said a school bus driver loading students saw a man in a wooded area "with what appeared to be a rifle."

"The school buses partially loaded with children immediately left the school parking lot," said Balmes. "The schools, along with surrounding schools, were immediately placed on lockdown."

Police searched the wooded area and found a 17-year-old man matching the bus driver's description. He was taken into custody, and police located a bb gun in the woods. The man said he had been shooting birds in the woods, Balmes said. Charges are pending.

"No reports of shots fired were received," said Balmes.

The school lockdown was lifted after about 15 minutes.
