Teen Who Drowned in Third Lake Identified as Grayslake Central Student

A 16-year-old boy who drowned Monday afternoon while out swimming and boating with friends in Third Lake has been identified as Matt Reed of Grayslake, according to media reports. 

Reed was an incoming junior at Grayslake Central High School, according to the Daily Herald. 

Reed was out on a pontoon boat on a large private lake in Third Lake when he went under the water about 4 p.m. Monday and did not resurface, according to Daily Herald. 

The group of seven friends were swimming off the boat about 100 yards from shore and in water that was about 40 feet deep, according to NBC Chicago. 

Reed's body was recovered at about 8 p.m., according to the Daily Herald.  

Grayslake Central posted the following message Tuesday on its website: "The D127 school community is pulling together to support family and community members as we deal with the tragic news of the death of GCHS junior Matt Reed.  Our hearts and prayers are with Matt’s family and we are working together to support the Reed family, as well as our students and staff."

Reed was active in athletics at Grayslake Central and was on the golf team, the sophomore basketball team and the lacrosse team, according to the Chicago Tribune. 

He was remembered as extremely hard-working and described by his basketball coach, Brian Moe, as "a funny, outgoing, caring kid who always had a smile on his face," according to the Chicago Tribune. 

Counselors, staff and administrators are available to support and assist students following the tragic death, according to the D127 statement. District 127 also referenced the following information as helpful for those dealing with grief: NASP and local counseling services.

An autopsy of Reed's body was completed Tuesday morning but the results were not immediately available, according to the Daily Herald.
