Updated: Woodland Bus Driver Charged with Sex Assault

A veteran bus driver for Woodland School District 50 is scheduled to appear in court June 12 on sex assault charges involving a victim under 17.

Woodland District 50 bus driver Kristin Miks, 32, of the 33000 Block of Sunset Ave., in Wildwood, was arrested May 13 on two counts of Criminal Sexual Assault and four counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse, reported the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The victim was under the age of 17 at the time of the offenses. The victim’s mother found messages from Miks referring to the encounters and reported it to the police, according to the sheriff's office.

The Daily Herald is reporting the victim is a female.

According to the Lake County News-Sun, Miks also has charges of cruelty to animals pending against her for allegedly mistreating three dogs in her care. In addition, reports the News-Sun, Miks was sentenced to six months of supervision for disorderly conduct in 2011.

Miks is a five year veteran of Woodland District 50, employed as a school bus driver. The victim was not associated with District 50 or Miks’ employment as a bus driver. 

Miks is free after posting 10 percent of a $150,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on June 12.

In working with Woodland District 50 the following is their response to the incident:

The Board of Education and its administration of Woodland Community Consolidated School District 50 were notified in April that a school bus driver, Kristin Miks, was under investigation for criminal charges.

The driver was placed on immediate suspension pending the outcome of the investigation. On May 14, Woodland Community Consolidated School District was notified by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office that Ms. Miks was being charged with two counts of sexual assault and four counts of sexual abuse.

The Board of Education is taking appropriate action with regard to the staff member. Woodland Community Consolidated School District 50 will continue to work cooperatively with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office regarding the charges.
