Downtown Memorial Day Parade To Celebrate Service Men and Women

Grayslake will host its annual Memorial Day event this Monday with a parade and service.

Grayslake will be honoring the men and women who have died while in the line of duty and recognize all of those who have served this Monday during its annual Memorial Day event.

Grayslake Mayor Rhett Taylor said the event is a long-standing tradition in Grayslake.

“We encourage you to come out and recognize those who have served our village and our country,” he said at a recent board meeting.

The parade will kick off in Grayslake Central High School’s parking lot on Lake Street at 9:30 a.m. The parade will move south on Lake Street to Junior Avenue and end at Memorial Park. The Memorial Day service will take place at the park immediately following the parade.

Ron Jarvis, Grayslake Village Board trustee and United States Navy veteran, encouraged the community to attend the celebration at the recent board meeting.

“This is always a well attended event and this year we’re hoping for no rain,” he said.

According to the Weather Channel’s website Grayslake is expected to have mostly sunny weather with a high of 75 degrees the day of the event.

The parade will feature a variety of local organizations and clubs including local girl scout and boy scout troops, students from Grayslake North and Central Marching Bands and Poms, the Grayslake Lions and Exchange Clubs, the Grayslake Park District, the Grayslake Fire and Police Departments and American Cancer Society Relay for Life, among many others.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and set up alongside the parade route to enjoy the event.

Brigadier General Antone F. Remich, United States Army retiree, will be the keynote speaker during the Memorial Service. The service will also honor two local servicemen who were lost in the war: Lance Corporal Sean Patrick Maher, USMC, and Specialist Joey Whiting Dimock II.

Maher was killed in action on patrol with with Weapons Company 1st Batallion, 3rd Marines in Hit in Iraq February 2, 2005. Dimock died from wounds suffered while serving with 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Forward Operating Base in Salerno, Afghanistan on July 10, 2010.
