The history of the Village of Grayslake can be told through the many artifacts and antiques that are displayed in the new 11,000-square-foot Grayslake Heritage Center and Village Municipal History Museum.
"Embracing Change, the Growth of Grayslake" is a new gallery on the second floor which documents the explosive growth the village has had in the last century.
The building has its own unique history. It first started as a one-room school house in 1895, but was also a fire department, jailhouse, library, Grayslake Chamber of Commerce and the Grayslake Village Hall.

The new facility was designed by Daniel Robinson Architects and compliments the original architecture of the building and of the downtown district.
"Thank you to all of the people who have spent countless hours over many years to support the museum and make the new addition happen," Grayslake Mayor Rhett Taylor said.

Former state Rep. Robert Churchill spoke of how his grandfather first came to Grayslake to start a law practice fhat he and his family have continued for 107 years.
"The new addition has been a labor of love," said Charlotte Renehan, Grayslake Historical Society Director. She thanked the members of the historical society for their continued support.
The Grayslake Heritage Center and Village Municipal History Museum is located at 164 Hawley St.. The museum is open to the public from 9 a.m to 2 p.m. Thursdays and the second Sunday of the month. Admission is free. For more information, call 847-223-7663.
