Schakowsky, Schneider Urge Sequester Action

Schneider pleads for cooperation while Schakowsky warns of consequences of pending spending cuts.

With automatic spending cuts totaling $1.2 trillion over the next 10 years set to go into effect Friday, Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) took to the floor of the House of Representatives Tuesday to urge action.

Schakowsky warned of a reduction of military preparedness, less ability for small businesses to find loans, a reduction of food inspectors, less airport security because of layoffs at the Transportation Safety Administration and a drop in money for mental health services.

“We’ve all been talking about the need for more mental health services around this whole issue of gun violence and it’s predicted about 373,000 adults and children who need mental health services won’t find them,” Schakowsky said.

Like Schakowsky, Schneider is worried about the negative impact the cuts will have on the middle class. He urged Republicans and Democrats to come together and find a solution.

“This is the opportunity to come together for both sides to roll up their sleeves and find a way forward,” Schneider said. “I know there’s common ground between the sides but it won’t be done unless together, Democrats and Republicans, get to the table and prevent the across the board irresponsible cuts.”

Take a look at the complete speeches both members of Congress made on the House floor join the discussion about a solution to this looming situation.

They are? This opinion piece made me think however, about the true differences between progressives and conservatives. Conservatives believing they are morally right sounds a lot better than they're just being a**holes. If Americans could think about the true differences between the groups instead of the us vs. them mentality, maybe solutions between the two wouldn't be so difficult. I do find it hard to believe though, that all of the conservative politicians are doing what they do for moral purposes. There's just too much money in their own pockets at stake.

Has not Obama been President and this is his fifth year? My gosh there are still the excuses, as if he isn't. As for any President, this one is not spared from political opposition. When has the recent government spending been both necessary and helpful? or did I miss something. With the massive accumulating debt in recent years, spending more ultimately will lead, if we are not already there, to an end. Just think where that budget would be if business started picking up, money was being lent, and interest rates would increase as a consequence. Keep adding to the debt?

No one wanted Obama to fail because that would mean the system would fail. You're a complete moron obviously, if we keep spending on useless welfare programs, investing in failing companies and needlessly spending the way we have the economy will tank. The old "spend money to make money" is bs, you want to make money make it easier for economic growth to take place instead of taxing America to death. So get your facts straight scumbag

For those of you unfamiliar with Ms. Gill, here is info gathered from her bio in The Huffington Post. Ms. Gill is a founding member of the Illinois Tenth Congresssional District Democrats. She has worked for several democratic candidates including Dan Seals in the Illinois Tenth District and her cousin, David Gill, who is running for congress in the Illinois 15th Congressional District. She is a Democrat and will no doubt support ANY policy implemented by Democrats. Hey, Ellen, weren't you at the president's inauguration in Washington in January? Also, I will say that I don't want Obama to fail, but I do want his policies to fail. Of course it would be best if his policies are/were not implemented to begin with, but that is too much to ask for. Hmmm, even Donna Brasile called her health care provider to find out why her insurance rates went up so much. Want to know why? Obamacare--it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Of course the Republicans do not want the country to be in ruins, but that is the direction Mr. Obama is taking us with his lock-step march into socialism. Yes, I want to see those policies fail too.
