Yingling Defeats Cole in the 62nd District

Update 9:54 p.m.:

Sam Yingling pulled off an upset against incumbent Sandy Cole in the 62nd House race, as final unofficial results including early voting totals and vote by mails totals are in. Yingling was declared the winner with 20,837 votes, or 55.31%, to Cole's 16,833 votes, or 44.69%. This is with 63 out of 63 precincts reporting, according to the Lake County Clerk's website.

"It's an amazing journey I never anticipated," Sam Yingling, winner of the 62nd District, told his supporters from the Comfort Inn Suites Tuesday.

Yingling thanked his supporters, family, campaign manager Andrew Kretschmar and others for their tireless work.

Sandy Cole could not be reached for comment.

Update 9:12 p.m.:

Sam Yingling has defeated Sandy Cole in the 62nd House race. With 63 of 63 precincts reporting, Yingling received 14,229 votes, or 54.38%, to Cole's 11,937 votes, or 45.62%, according to the Lake County Clerk's website. A total of 26,166 votes were cast in this race.

Update 7:45 p.m.:

Sam Yingling has taken an early lead in the 62nd House race. He has received nearly 55% of the votes, or 9,782 votes, compared to incumbent Sandy Cole who has received about 45% or 8,018 votes. This is with 42 of 63 precincts reporting.

Background

Republican Sandy Cole is the incumbent 62nd District State Representative. She was first elected to the position, which is her full-time job, in 2006. She holds a bachelor's degree from Rockford College and earned a secondary education teaching certificate.

Cole previously served on the Lake County Board from 1996 to 2006, and was a forest preserve commissioner. Cole also served as a director for the Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) of Lake County from 1994 to 1996.

She lives in Grayslake with her husband Stephen and has three grown children.

Democrat Sam Yingling, was born and raised in Grayslake. He was elected Avon Township supervisor in 2009.

Yingling graduated from Carmel Catholic High School then studied Public Policy and Administration and Urban Planning at Depaul University. Following college Yingling moved to Round Lake Beach where he went into real estate and started a local advertising company.

Yingling has served on the Round Lake school board, as past president of the Round Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, the Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center Foundation and Mano A Mano Family Resource Center.
