Carbone Working "Behind the Scenes" In District 46

School board member absent from the last three meetings.

Does absence make the heart grow fonder? That question may be answered when District 46 board member Michael Carbone attends Wednesday's Grayslake District 46 board meeting.

Carbone has not been in attendance since the June 15 meeting. He has abstained from voting on several issues, including the extension of Superintendent Ellen Correll's contract.

"I have abstained from voting and you could call it a form of protest," said Carbone. "You know there have been politics going on for a while."

An abstention to vote can be used as "a protest vote if the vote is cast in an election to demonstrate the caster's unhappiness with the choice of candidates or refusal of the current political system," according to Wikipedia.

Carbone stated that he is still committed to the D46 board and attended a free tax seminar over the summer which he believes will help him with his work on the board.

"I have had a busy summer. I was on vacation with my family. I was also working behind the scenes," said Carbone. "I participated in a tax conference in Springfield which taught me a lot about how our money is being spent and where it is going."

Sparks have flown frequently between Carbone, Superintendent Ellen Correll and fellow board members. The board, prior to the election of two new members in April, accused Carbone of violating board policy by attempting to access private D46 staffing information and publicly censured him at a March board meeting.

Since joining the board two years ago, Carbone has a been a vocal opponent of board politics and has pushed for more financial transparency.

"I know I have been outspoken, but I think we (the board) have gotten a lot of good things done. The discussions have been a little disjointed, but I think the results have been effective," said Carbone.

Discussion and approval of Superintendent Correll's contract is again on the agenda for the August 10 meeting, which will be held at Grayslake Middle School (GMS) at 6:30 p.m.
