CLC Celebrates 'Earth Week'

The College of Lake County has a full week of events planned in recognition of Earth Day.

The College of Lake County wants the community to  “Think Globally, Eat Locally." It's also their 2013 Earth Week theme.

Free, family-friendly events will include hands-on activities presented by CLC instructors and other experts April 20-27. Unless stated, all programs will be approximately one hour long and held at the CLC Grayslake campus at 19351 W. Washington St.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Week Long Art Exhibition: Drawing Display for Earth Week, coordinated by Hans Habeger, CLC art instructor. Student drawings from Drawing II (ART 127) will portray landscapes that emphasize nature, our environment, environmental conflicts and/or human impact on the local landscape. Location: display cases across from the President’s office, Room A207.

Saturday, April 20, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. - CLC Campus Clean-Up. The CLC Environmental Club joins forces with other clubs to host the annual CLC Campus Clean-Up. Wear clothes that can get dirty, closed toe shoes and bring work gloves. Meet at the C Wing door at 10 a.m. and spread out from there.

Monday, April 22, 12 p.m., Southlake Campus, Room V336 - Take it to the roof! From green roofs to rooftop food gardens by Jason Cashmore, CLC biology instructor. Learn about different types of rooftop gardens, such as green roofs and rooftop food gardens and their environmental benefits, and tour the Southlake Campus green roof. A drawing for three $50 gift cards (one winner per gift card) to the Chicago restaurant uncommonground, the first certified organic roof top farm in the country, will also be held.

Tuesday, April 23, 11 a.m., Room T326 - Biodiversity: What the heck is it and why should I care? by Lara Sviatko, CLC student and employee. What is biodiversity and why is preserving biodiversity necessary for a healthy, functioning ecosystem? Discover the benefits gained from a diverse ecosystem and what is lost when species disappear in a interactive and fun program meant for all ages, including students and families.

Tuesday, April 23, 7 p.m., Room C005 - Edible landscapes and foraging by Milton Dixon, Midwest Permaculture. Milton Dixon, a permaculture teacher and advocate, will discuss foraging local landscapes and integrating edible plants in your local landscape for everyone from local gardeners to intrigued students.

Wednesday, April 24, 12 p.m., Room T326 - Climate change in the Midwest: Evidence and impacts by Shane Jones, CLC biology instructor. From extremes in weather to longer growing seasons and earlier bird migrations, evidence of climate change is all around us. Explore evidence of climate change in the Midwest and the potential consequences it will have on human and wildlife populations.

Wednesday, April 24, 7 p.m., Room C005 - Snakes alive! by Dr. Mike Corn, CLC professor emeritus, and Rob Carmichael, curator/director of the Wildlife Discovery Center of Lake Forest and CLC adjunct instructor. Back by popular demand, this kid-friendly program provides an up close and personal introduction to snakes and other reptiles! Discover reptile myths, mysteries and facts and learn about their natural history by meeting animals such as lizards and endangered snake species.

  • 10 and 11 a.m.: Meet in Atrium for a community garden and farm tour. Tour CLC’s community garden to see where some of the fresh produce served in the college’s student-managed Prairie Restaurant is raised. Program starts and ends in the Atrium. Registration required.
  • 1:30–2:30 p.m.: Prairie Restaurant, Room C001 - Farm-to-Table Culinary Demonstration. After harvesting fresh, spring greens from the CLC campus farm, see an exciting demonstration by the student-managed Prairie staff on how to prepare food in an upscale restaurant. Registration required.
  • 2:30-3:30 p.m.: Prairie Restaurant, Room C001 - Honey demonstration. Learn about the great uses for honey and create bee bars!
  • 3–5 p.m., Atrium - Really Local Farmer's Market. Buy fresh fruits, vegetables and other produce from local farmers.
  • 7–9 p.m., Room C005 - Movie Screening: “Ingredients.” CLC will screen a new film addressing the local food movement and the development of sustainable food systems. This enjoyable, family-friendly movie explores why people are changing the way we produce food and the benefits of local food production.

Friday, April 26, 12 p.m., Room T326 - Personal choices for a bigger change: One person's attempt to make a difference through the choices she makes by Elisabeth Martin, CLC biology instructor. Learn how personal choices such as buying fair trade and/or organic products, participating in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), buying humanely raised meat and lending to Kiva.org (a micro lending organization) can make an impact both here and worldwide.

Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. - CLC Campus Restoration Day. Come join us for our first-ever all campus restoration day. We will cut buckthorn, pull garlic mustard and do other activities to help improve the quality of CLC’s natural areas. Wear clothes that can get dirty, long-sleeved shirts and pants; closed toed toes shoes are required. If possible, bring work gloves and drinking water. Meet by the C Wing entrance at 10 a.m. and we’ll and spread out from there.
