D46 Board To Vote On Superintendent's Contract Wednesday

School board members will decide whether to extend Ellen Correll's contract beyond June 2012.

Embattled District 46 Superintendent Ellen Correll should know if her contract will be extended after Wednesday evening's school board meeting.

The approval to extend the contract had been listed on the agenda for the August 10 General Board Meeting, but was moved to tomorrow Sept. 7 in order for the board members to have two meetings to discuss the issue.

Board members Michael Carbone, Kip Evans and Shannon Smigielski had asked for additional time to discuss Correll's performance prior to making a decision.

Correll has been accused of improperly using D46 e-mail to campaign for the incumbent board candidates during the April elections, mishandling the hiring of a business manager for the district, distributing state monies as bonuses to staff and over-spending on the district's participation in the Blue Ribbon School program.

Correll has publicly apologized for responding to the election e-mails and has been lauded for her performance in her six years with the district by Assistant Superintendent Lynn Barkley, Board President Ray Millington, Vice President Keith Surroz and board members Karen Weinert and Sue Facklam.

Some district parents have also spoken out on her behalf during the public comments portion of board meetings, stating that she has been instrumental in maintaining a balanced budget and has sought continuous improvement in the district.

The board meeting will be held at Grayslake Middle School, 440 N. Barron Boulevard, Grayslake on Wednesday, September 7 at 6:30 p.m.
