D46 Board To Vote On Superintendent's Contract Wednesday

School board members will decide whether to extend Ellen Correll's contract beyond June 2012.

Embattled District 46 Superintendent Ellen Correll should know if her contract will be extended after Wednesday evening's school board meeting.

The approval to extend the contract had been listed on the agenda for the August 10 General Board Meeting, but was moved to tomorrow Sept. 7 in order for the board members to have two meetings to discuss the issue.

Board members Michael Carbone, Kip Evans and Shannon Smigielski had asked for additional time to discuss Correll's performance prior to making a decision.

Correll has been accused of improperly using D46 e-mail to campaign for the incumbent board candidates during the April elections, mishandling the hiring of a business manager for the district, distributing state monies as bonuses to staff and over-spending on the district's participation in the Blue Ribbon School program.

Correll has publicly apologized for responding to the election e-mails and has been lauded for her performance in her six years with the district by Assistant Superintendent Lynn Barkley, Board President Ray Millington, Vice President Keith Surroz and board members Karen Weinert and Sue Facklam.

Some district parents have also spoken out on her behalf during the public comments portion of board meetings, stating that she has been instrumental in maintaining a balanced budget and has sought continuous improvement in the district.

The board meeting will be held at Grayslake Middle School, 440 N. Barron Boulevard, Grayslake on Wednesday, September 7 at 6:30 p.m.

What other payoffs, Dean? I don't understand what you're trying to say.
Elizabeth September 07, 2011 at 01:10 AM
The BARE MINIMUM?? Now I realize you are an ideologue who self confessed that you dont bother to read the articles, you just come on here to spout off about the teabaggers and the Koch bros. etc, but the idea that the poor students of D46 are getting along with the bare minimum because I am so cheap is really just about the funniest and sickest thing I have heard, ever. I dont have to pay anything?????? 10 grand in property taxes for a house I couldnt sell for 250,000 and that is not paying anything? What color is the sky in your world, Bully, erm I mean Sully? You are a joke, GFY, buddy.
Sully September 07, 2011 at 01:55 AM
My, my Liz. Kind of touchy there. Why don't you place your anger on those who really deserve it. You know- the politicians who are the real culprits in screwing you over. A small town school superintendent has nothing to do with the tax breaks given to corporations and the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans forcing YOUR taxes to go up. The superintendent has nothing to do with the value of homes being lowered while banks rake in the profits. So get some facts and act on those instead of what you perceive to be such an easy solution.
Jim Marshall September 07, 2011 at 03:39 AM
I do not think a vote to not renew the Superintendent's contract at this point in time is in the best interest of the school district.
Elizabeth September 07, 2011 at 01:45 PM
Hey Bully, since everyone knows about your anger issues, that's pretty funny coming from you. And of course, like the sun rising, you once again try to change the conversation from what is happening in this district to your ideology. Why don't you find another board, one that is actually concerned with national politics? Because you are nothing but an irrelevant broken record here. And that is my final word to you. Go try to yank someone else's chain.
Elizabeth September 07, 2011 at 01:49 PM
Well, of course you get the leaders you deserve. If some of the people on this board are a microcosm of D46 (and I pray they are NOT) then I guess we will be living with inefficient, ineffective, unethical and corrupt leadership on the school board and in the supt office for a very long time. God forbid we actually demand better for our tax dollars. What a bunch of brainwashed suckers. And poor me, cos I'm stuck here with my house that won't sell. Sorry I ever heard of Grayslake.

We have had one of the best leadership teams ever. Ellen is awesome and her teachers are equally awesome. To heck with the board, they are just an over site committee. I'm happy that I pay a hefty sum to the schools. I'm sad that you bought a house you couldn't afford and now are joshin' to dump because you keep getting the tax bill and it hurts. I'm sorry that you have bought into the notion that fishing expeditions which cost me money have netted positive results. They have been nothing but a HUGE distraction. Please do show up at the board mtg and try to talk. I will be the lanky 6' 7" 9-day unshaven character in the back who will be making all types of disruptive noises (clearing throat, sneezing, coughing...).

It was not a felony - move on and stop making trouble.
Brad Faxton September 07, 2011 at 05:39 PM
Move on. Good lord.
Brad Faxton September 07, 2011 at 07:44 PM
Wow - you seem to have some very deep rooted issues. Step back from the keyboard and take a deep breath. Would you like a Zima? Fresca? Pork rinds? I do have some extra boiled chicken - it was spiced with curry which isn't too hot. Ham sandwich on pumpernickle? Popcorn? Grilled asparagus?

Oh, and you simply can't figure out how to properly reply to a thread. You hit the green button underneath the post vs another random one on the screen. Silly educated folks.
C-Dub September 07, 2011 at 08:59 PM
Why is no one jumping on D127? They take just as much taxes as D46.
HM September 07, 2011 at 09:12 PM
C-Dub - fair question! I can personally say that my experiences with D127 (Central High School specifically) has been extremely positive. They have made unbelievable improvements to their Honors and AP programs, and continue to excel. I do not find the same values and push to excellence in D46. Too many shenanigans with the BOE and superintendent. It seems like a deep rooted cultural thing to me. D127 has done a better job responding to the community and building programs we can all be proud. of. D46 cuts gifted programs, gives stimulus funds out as bonuses, pays a company to give them an award (say what you will - that one just plain stinks), hires a former BOE member as an "engineer " (he is NOT licensed engineer!) and pays him $75k a year to get HVAC bids (look how well that went!) etc. All of this is way before Lennie started his nonesense. I really do not trust the motives of a number of the board members at all, and have first hand experiences with the absolute lack of integrity they have (again, way before the Lenny circus), but I will not go into that publically. D 46 has some excellent teachers, but I've had my share of barely adequate teachers as well. Smart Boards do not make smart students - just saying.

Correll is a link in the old chain which needs to be broken. facklam's dirty little actions will make it virtually impossible for her to get re-elected in 2015. Surroz and Weinert will be in the crosshairs in 2013. I can't wait.

I'm saying - "If the shoe fits, wear it". Why else would anyone condone criminal activity?
Sully September 08, 2011 at 02:27 AM
Stop blaming everybody else for YOUR issues Liz. It's too bad you have such little understanding of economics and how they interact with politics. Your pity party is yours alone.

Sorta sounds like that manipulated Fox News sound byte from Hoffa.
Nightcrawler September 08, 2011 at 01:18 PM
Gotta love her handle, though. I like that "libturd" thing. Makes me feel special. "Whiny," I'm not so sure about. Seems like us socialists do a lot less whining than the All-American felony fighters on this board.
Tim Froehlig September 08, 2011 at 04:05 PM
While what Correll did may not have been a felony, according to Illinois law, what another board member did WAS a felony, and if the state's attorney's office is too blind or chooses not to see that....well, maybe that's why there are now FIVE candidates running for that office here in Lake County. You can ignore the facts all you want, but it doesn't change the fact these things took place, and it never will. Worst of all, many of the people who were involved in this are still overseeing our childrens' educations, and that is truly pathetic. It shows how much people in this district care aout ethical behavior.

Ellen goes through another one! http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20110914/news/709149788/&ct=ga&cad=CAcQARgAIAAoATAAOABA_cvE8wRIAVAAWABiBWVuLVVT&cd=U_gVzxaGTZo&usg=AFQjCNEGQJ27iQ0SM02ClZe4eOU4-kJkzQ

What in the name of God is she doing to these people??????????? Very disturbing.
LMJ September 14, 2011 at 11:53 PM
Just wait for it... it will be everyone and everything else's fault.

Got yer rifle aimed at 'em, huh? Lock and load!
Sully September 15, 2011 at 01:09 AM
Obviously he found those missing emails and was about to expose the criminal enterprise for everyone to see. I'm surprised he didn't have to enter the federal witness protection program. Ellen's slipping.
Softball Jim September 15, 2011 at 01:32 AM
Not going to blame anyone here, Any chance anyone actually read the article. He said he had a previous professional relationship with the head of the other school district. Also did anyone notice that he would be getting about 25K more in salary per year? Sounds like two good reasons to leave to me. Does his quote in the paper about the fact that it had nothing to do with D46. Does this suck for D46 yes. Can you really blame the BOE or Ellen for this? From reading the article, I think not.
Sully September 15, 2011 at 02:21 AM
Jim, you're trying to be rational with people who are not.
