District 127 Recognizes Students and Faculty

Students and teachers from Grayslake Central and North High Schools were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments.

Students Praised for Athletic Accomplishments

Catherine Finger, District 127 superintendent, opened the recent board meeting with praise for both Grayslake Central and student athletes and newly approved tenured faculty. While there has been much controversy at the schools lately due to three wrestling coaches from North abruptly resigning, Finger put the focus on the positive and celebrated successful students and teachers.

“This is a very, very, very special evening,” she said. When thanking students for their participation she said: “We’re so proud of you, so fortunate to have you representing us.”

Grayslake Central High School Wrestlers Recognized as State Qualifiers

Grayslake Central Principal Syd Klocke introduced Senior Bobby Raines, Junior Joey Valdivia and Senior Kevin Hein, who could not be present, to the school board as wrestlers who have been making headlines in their young careers.

Among many of the boys’ accomplishments, Raines was recognized for 76 varsity wins and qualifying for state twice; Valdivia was recognized for qualifying for state twice; and Hein is a two-time state qualifier and winner.

Grayslake Central High School Girls Basketball Coach and Team

Applause erupted for Steve Ikenn, girls basketball coach, after he was introduced as being IBCA’s Coach of the Year. Grayslake Central’s varsity girls basketball team earned praise for its success this past season including a 22-game winning streak.

Grayslake North High School Varsity Cheer

The Grayslake North Varsity Cheerleading team was applauded for placing ninth at the IHSA State finals, which was the team’s fourth time qualifying for state. The team qualified for state after placing third out of 17 teams in its division at the IHSA sectionals. Stephanie Kapchinksi, Grayslake North cheerleading coach, was also recognized.

Kendall Detweiler Receives Individual Praise

Grayslake North High School freshman Kendall Detweiler placed second out of 120 people in a 3-point shooting contest in girls basketball. Head Grayslake North coach Jim Sarver said the feat makes her one of the top finishers in District 127’s history.

Grayslake North High School Wrestlers

Junior Angel Cabrera won the sectional title at 199 pounds and advanced to the state wrestling tournament, along with sophomore Stone Dax, junior Nick Klein and senior Rich Downes.

Grayslake North Varsity Poms

Varsity Poms North placed 4th in state in AA Hip Hop.

Teachers Recognized for Tenure

Finger emphasized the significance of teachers receiving tenure saying they undergo a four-year process in which they are regularly evaluated. “This is something we take very seriously,” she said.

D127 To Be Open on Veteran’s Day

After a Public Hearing meeting, the board approved holding school open on Nov. 11, Veteran’s Day. According to the board, holding school on this day will allow administrators to implement ways to celebrate with students.

Denise Kindle, assistant superintendent, said that feeder schools will be alerted so that they can coincide their schedules. As a result of the approved school day students will receive a day off the Monday after the Easter holiday in second semester.
