District 46 Superintendent Contract Extended for One Year

The extension will be at Supt. Ellen Correll's current salary of $170,844.

District 46 Supt. Ellen Correll's contract has been approved for one year.

The school board voted 5-2 Wednesday night to approve the extension, which will be from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014, at her current salary of $170,844.

Board Members Kip Evans and Michael Carbone voted against the measure.

Evans said he would vote against the contract extension because he was under the assumption that the board was going to wait until all other contracts were approved, and they're not yet.

While the District 46 professional and school-related personnel have reached an agreement on a new contract for 2012-13 and 2013-14, according to Lake County Federation of Teachers Business Agent Jim Pergander, the school board has not yet voted on that matter. Additionally, the board must still approve the final teacher's union contract document.

Carbone said he agreed with Evans.

"In a professional sense, this should have been held off," Carbone said of the vote on Correll's contract extension. "Your employees and your staff should come first."

Board Member Shannon Smigielski said she really appreciated Correll's efforts during the strike in keeping parents informed.

"I think you did a heck of a fine job on that. It was above and beyond," said Smigielski. She added that she doesn't want incoming board members to have to decide quickly on who will lead the district.

Most recently, the vote on Correll's contract was delayed Jan. 9. to extend Correll's contract through June 2014 failed; both votes ended in a 3-3 tie.
