Sales A.A.S. degree information session

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 15.6 percent employment growth for sales representatives between 2010 and 2020. Because of this promising outlook, sales representative ranks 20th on U.S. News and World Report’s Best Jobs of 2012.

To understand how the College of Lake County could help provide better-trained sales persons for a variety of industries, CLC surveyed Lake County businesses and worked with local employers to develop a new Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program in sales. The program will launch in fall semester, which begins Aug. 20.

To learn more about the sales field and CLC’s new degree program, attend an information session at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6 in room T220 at the CLC Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

The degree is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to be great sales persons. The program culminates with a real-world sales internship to help make students stand out from other job applicants. The new 60-64 credit hour program includes general education and business administration coursework as well as 21 credits chosen from a specific sales concentration.

“I am really excited about our new degree in sales,” said Lori Oriatti, CLC business administration department chair. “Lake County businesses asked us to help provide better-trained sales people, and I believe that this new program will do the job well. Sales is a growing field with many opportunities for excellent pay and benefits.”

The A.A.S. in sales is a career program in business administration and is designed to prepare students for careers in inside sales, customer service and entry level sales positions. Sales degree graduates would be qualified to work in a variety of fields, including retail, hospitality (motels and resorts), manufacturing, wholesale and insurance. The degree is not designed to transfer to a four-year institution.

CLC’s A.A.S. degree in sales will include three new practical courses:

  • Relationship Selling (BUS 216), offered in fall 2012. The course introduces students to techniques of customer relationship building. Students will learn account management skills, including using technology to build customer relationships and loyalty for company growth.
  • Applied Selling (BUS 218), offered in spring 2013. This course is a bridge between theoretical sales methodology and selling applications and includes real-world role playing and interactive activities.
  • Sales Internship (BUS 230), offered in spring 2013, is a practical, hands-on sales internship providing valuable experience.
